I've never had a problem with police response times. Have called them for drink drivers, domestics assaults and dangerous driving and have had a unit in the area promptly each time.

The drink driver was so far gone she couldn't walk and the attending police were very thankful she was taken off the road.

Also Police don't get paid for any overtime they do. They only get time in lieu and that's only after a certain amount of time - something like 3 hours.

As I understand it Hamilton is the most understaffed region in the country...

tardtasticx: So a few months ago, there was a domestic a few houses down from us. People got the crap beaten out of them in the street with wood and bats and stuff, huge yelling matches ensued, then a dog got a beating too. Rang the Police many many times. No one showed up. Got a call a few hours later asking if everything was all fine and nothing since.

Tonight, the dairy over the road was being hit by some kids. 3 cars turned up, they jumped some fences, tried to get in etc. They stole some clothes from a clothing donation bin outside and we yelled and told them to get out and got some photos of their cars and plates. Rang the police 3 times. First 2 times were about what they were doing as it escalated, then we called once we found out the kids had driven to the next street and were hanging around there still. Was told "Oh sorry we had a shift change and it got cancelled, then we rebooked it and they got sent to a higher priority instead". At least 3 hours since that last call and not a peep.

It then reminded me of years and years ago at a friends party, some gang members tried to crash it and wouldn't take no for an answer. They went ballistic. Heaps of us rang and rang and rang, no one showed up. We were so lucky no one got seriously hurt that night. I couldn't believe it.

Now I understand that they do get busy and what not, but really, like the seriousness of two of these occasions obviously doesn't matter. So other than saying "HES GOT A GUN!" and screaming and leaving the phone off the hook, what would make them actually turn up? I really am worried that one day I'm going to need it and I'm going to be left dead somewhere.

Well if you were wealthy you would get better service.

As a practical joke someone sent us a fake letter which had the City Council letterhead on it, I copied it and sent it to the neighbours as it impacted them too.
Well I was made to look a fool, however one of the neighbours has friends in the council and complained to them
We had 3 detectives visit us 4 times over this, a practical joke gone bad. This was at the same time when police were wasting HUGE resources on the bloody cup-of-tea tapes.

Not long after our cars got broken into, police said they could "do it over the phone"

My sone was ripped off for $1200 for a motor from someone on trade me, gave police all the info, all we got back was "Yeah that person is well known to us" and then they were not interested.

Me, I have sod all time for the cops now.

Small crimes, would not waste my time reporting them.

Maybe...but you wouldn't really know.

Police staffing works similar to school class sizes.

e.g. Govt funds a school 1 principal, then 1 teacher per 30 students. So a hypothetical school of 300 *should* have 1 principal + 10 teachers.

School gets 30 more kids but instead of opening another class room school decides to use that new teacher as a deputy principal or something. Class sizes now 33....and so on.

Same thing happens in the Police; Govt allocates X many cops to Y area. Police bosses find Z "special" project for them to work on to increase bosses chance of promption and taking them away from the street where they are actually needed.

Manurewa might have 200 staff, 50 frontline. Hamilton may have 100 staff, 70 frontline.

A few weeks ago a colleague of mine had the cops turn up at his rural property looking for someone who they ended up arresting for 'sending inappropriate text messages'. Needless to say he was gobsmacked that our 'under resourced' police had time to waste on this nonsense.

Depends how inappropriate they were I guess.  Could potentially have been quite a serious matter, sending rude selfies and suggestions to a 10 year old perhaps?  Just saying, don't judge unless you know the whole story.

Haters gunna hate, and mostly comments are from 3rd hand, or one sided experiences.   The Police are always damned if they do and damned if they don't.
If you think you can do better feel free to join, spend 6 months training, 2 years on probation, work and study your backside off for the next handful of years, and maybe in time become a supervisor, and maybe in a few years you might get a promotion and have a say in how staff are deployed and what the priorities are.

Do establishments give any free food to the police anymore?

Back when I used to work at Mc Donalds. They gave police, Fire and Ambulance staff 50% off. This was about 12 Years ago. So don't know if they still do this. Also the store I worked at was a franchise one. So don't know if it was a company wide policy or just a policy of the store owner.

It worked really well as a disgruntled ex employee was causing trouble and no problem getting a Police response. Also quite a few employees had stories of getting let off traffic fines while wearing their Mc Donald's uniform.

Police aren't allowed to accept it anymore.

 ... just had to...

always find these topics entertaining... almost as good as the revenue gathering threads!

never had an issue with response times for police myself.. apart from when they are writing a ticket for me when they surely could be catching someone far worse ;)

People love to hate the police right to the time they need them and they come and save their butts.

don't say "he's got a gun" unless one is really involved (and not just some BB guns)

otherwise it could only delay any police deployment, and in certain cases, ambulance and other staff that could make a real difference. they would have to wait for a clear signal from the police before entering the scene.

move to a safer neighborhood i suppose.
