How do we decide between a great deal and a web pricing error.  A discount of 10%, 20%,30%, etc.

At what point can the consumer reasonably expect the price to be honoured ?

Taken to an extreme is there anything to stop sellers advertising a very good price then when you get to the shop, they say sorry.... that was a mistake but we do have this product at a higher price ie bait and switch...

OK this discount sounds like is 50% more but its not common to see things advertised at 20-30% off as part of sales.

You cannot know.

At the point you have the goods in your possession, assuming they were obtained honestly, you have a pretty good claim.

There is nothing to stop it - but it is deceptive practice and therefore illegal. A retailer would be stupid to do this which is why it does not happen often.

I'm inclined to agree - it isnt a good look on DSE's part. I'm just hoping their people saw this and are implementing some checks to ensure it doesnt happen again.

We all make mistakes - it's how we deal with them that matters. I've had pretty good experiences with DSE in the past - I'm sure they'll fix this issue going forward. :)

You'd think they would have done so the last time:

I would suggest that the nature of this issue is different from that one.  They claimed the cause of that one was a system glitch (plausible) but this looks to me like a fat-finger of the discount where they meant for it to be $50 off, but accidentally put in $500 off and didn't properly check the output before committing.  Hey, at least it wasn't a $10,000 overdraft they fat fingered.

Agreed.  But the 'egg on face' end result for Dick is much the same.

Just a question to those who made this purchase. Are Dick Smith legally liable to honour the sale? Or can they say, na we cant sell at that price and your order will be cancelled.

If its a mistake, the retailer doesn't have to sell the goods at the incorrect price.

Ahh I see that. I knew that one. But, what if I have already bought the item, made payment, got a confirmation in email about my order (just have to go and pick up the item). Then a few hours later, I get a call saying oh the price was a mistake and you have to pay the difference.

I do know that if the price is displayed, and if it is a genuine mistake, the seller doesnt have to sell at the price since its an invitation to treat -but this does not say anything about a sale that has already happened. Although, I havent received a tax invoice as yet.

If it's not already in your hands they are generally within their rights to revoke it

Ya i thought that would be the case.

I am still hoping there is a loophole that does benefit the consumer who already has been charged - should be within my full rights to go and get the item since payments already made and order already processed and confirmed.
