Problem with that is they expect a lifelong support contract with 1 hour restore Service Level Targets

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

I had a large collection of assorted cables, hardware etc that I had a good clean out of before recently moving houses. Once at the new house I promptly needed a whole heap of the stuff I threw away :/ Always seems to be the way that you'll need it as soon as you get rid of it

or worse still I recently looked for some SATA cables, couldn't find any so bought some more to only find that I did have some its just that they were buried at the bottom of the box :-(

use it until it breaks, or if i have to get a new one i either give it away or sell on trademe

Im a hoarder, so it builds up in the closet.

I have 8 old ATI cards, mostly PCI/AGP stacked up in a box. All of which would still work at a moments notice should I require a stand in for my current 7 series card.

...I have no Nvidia cards. Not because I'm a fanboy...But because they all blew up before they could reach the cupboard.

You're not wrong. That, or the equally-frustrating opposite: something goes wrong and they don't tell me about it for months, choosing instead to suffer through it or stop using whatever it was entirely.

My grandmother had issues with Outlook a while back, and rather than bother me, went to her local computer repair agent. They promptly pulled out the hard drive to scan for bad sectors for god knows what reason, Googled for the answer, fixed it, charged her $120.00 for the privilege, and then refused to give the machine back to her unless she shelled out for a 12-month subscription to their paid antivirus of choice. I was not amused.

I sometimes keep the odd thing long enough for it to appreciate in value. I sold a 5 1/4 floppy drive (at least 20 years old) recently on trademe for $80 which I was going to biff in the bin. But people need some of these old drives to retrieve old data off old disks, and they fetch even larger amounts on ebay.

flynkiwi: I am having a bit of a cleanup at home and wondered what most people do with their old equipment?
Eg I have a couple old PCs (Pentium D), non Freeview 32" LCD TV, DVD Home Theater, Xbox original etc

It all works but the technology has been superseded.

Was thinking of putting it on Trademe but are interested to see how others dispose of it?

In hindsight instead of holding on to it with the intention that I could use it somewhere else (but now no room to) its best to actually sell off as soon as possible anything you upgrade as not to be hit by too much depreciation in its value...

WAY to modern for me, My computer collection stop with 8086 and I have hundreds of computers and very understanding partner.

For us in the past we have used a PC for a good 5 or 6yrs then it became a print server downstairs to share that one printer. Then to about 10yrs we sent it to a landfill that takes free IT equipment. Or eDay befor that.

For our phones we use for a good few yrs, still only have old color and b/w dumb phones which we will send to the recyclers again.

My PC and laptop are 5 and 7yrs resp old still working.

I guess the point for us is that we don't really upgrade that often. My first real Smartphone now is 1yr old myself, released 2yr ago. I have a 2yr old Nokia Symbian I have that's gone as a work admin phone.
