Live on the Shore like i do :)
Middlemore would be a little way from the Shore. Given all the traffic heads south you would get delays. Maybe try living in Mt Eden?
Most of the Shore has UFB if not will do in 6 months. Middle suburbs are more likely to get in 2016-2017.

If proximity is key, Mangere Bridge would be worth a look, real close to Middlemore, great suburb, great schools, great people but no UFB until next year (I think, that said I'm getting 50/10 MB/s on VDSL)

Great, my desire to live in Shore is not there anymore.

I dont want to live close to bmw boy racer...

Thanks everyone, that is useful. I think I will look for somewhere in between Shore and Middlemore.

I wouldn't go any higher than Albany. Traffic is just so bad at 5:00. My sister commutes from Whangaparaoa to the City and she often is barely over the bridge in 40 mins she tells me.

Depends on your desired start/finish time and if you have flexibility. If you really have to sit in serious traffic then a comfortable seat and a good air system is a must.

Happy nakedmolerat got the answer he wanted but for others that may be pondering the same sort of thing, I have a comment about 'going west'.
The ring road talked about isn't due to be finished until 2017. In the mean time getting to South Auckland requires going through spaghetti junction or wending your way through mount roskill to get to the south western motorway. And even when the Waterview tunnel is completed you still have to get along the Nor western motorway, which at peak times is every bit as bad as the bridge or the southern. Peak times adds at least an hour to the commute compared to off peak.
Even going north towards Albany from west has its problems. The upper harbour motorway is great, but as soon as you try to get off it to go to your destination you are into gridlock.
My shift work means I mainly travel off peak luckily but I have decided not to complain about Auckland traffic because I choose to live where I live and work where I work.
Slightly OT: What really gets up my snotbox at the moment is people sitting at green lights obviously reading or replying to texts, or not using indicators because they are steering with one hand and using the other to hold their phone to their ear.

Sorry didn't see if it was Middlemore the suburb, or the hospital.

If its the hospital, there is a train station right at the front door.  AN AT hop card for travel from the shore should be about $190 a month. This will allow you to park and ride on the Northern express right to Brotomart, and take a train to Middlemore ( the train part of the journey is 30 mins, and soon to be quicker with the new electric trains).

There are other options other than a car :-)

You must be mad.

You won't live in the shore you will live in the car.
