It's a joke.

In the absense of any internet connection, most modern devices would presumably display some dull variant of 'You are offline, this page is not available'. An interactive teapot would be much more fun.

The blue screen of death perhaps as PCs do when Windows crashes. Perhaps CTRL-ALT-DELETE will fix it.

It's a bit like vision, what we se is not what we see, but what the spectrum is determined by our retina, and them to our brain. If my eyes were a radio telescope , it will be different. So, what is the "real" vision ?

Probably "Internet Explorer Cannot Display Webpage" or a similar DNS error depending on your browser.

You can simulate the event by powering off your Home Router (for a temporary experience) or by beating the utter **** out of it so it will never work again (for a more permanent experience)

Please note that if you do try the permanent method, you will be unable to visit GZ to report that the Internet isn't working.

For a "What would it be like if nothing useful was on the Internet, just fluff and bollocks no one uses?" experience, please disable IPv4 on your computer and do all your Internet access via the IPv6 protocol.
(Please note with this experience you will have to swat away the tumbleweeds and the occasional angry geek shouting "HEY, IPV6 is really taking off this year", the same as they have for the last 10 years.)

Well it could well happen if the southern cross cable is snapped by earthquake or something rare. What would happen then?

You just ring your ISP,
and they'll reset it for you.

Or tell you to reset your modem and allow 20mins for it to resync....
....and then you'll ring them again.....
....and again.....
....and again (but won't be able to get thru)

Eventually you'll give up and be forced to watch some reality musical cooking program on freeview

The Internet is pretty resilient in these cases. You'd still have access to all the sites in New Zealand, DNS would keep working, mostly, there's a root DNS server in the Sky Tower.
Lots and lots and LOTS of sites would time out, or produce DNS errors etc. Sites like GZ would probably fail to load until fixed, due to being hosted behind CloudFare. Sites that expect to load ads from Australia/elsewhere might not load properly or render correctly. Google would fail.

Hard to predict exactly, but it'd be pretty major!

And we wouldn't be able to Tweet or Facebook about it.
