Never, The country wouldnt survive if the shore lost power.

I have been on the shore for 6 years and had 1 power cut for 5 minutes.

Lost power for 1 day, missed the All Blacks and NRL Grand Final. :(

Reckon there'll be compensation offered?

joker97: What's an inverter? Is that a generator?

The most common domestic ones will take 12v DC in and output 240vac to power appliances, so you can run from a 12v battery.

Inverters are great! But, I have power since I live on the Shore

Fully agree. Power is more reliable on the shore. And so it should be considering vector charge the power retailers more for shore and west based customers. Than central, east and south based ones. And no refund cheques either.

But Im still prepared. Due to the 5 min power outage I had earlier this year after all the storms. I now have my UFB, 24 Port Gigabit switch, router, and Wifi all backed up by a 100Amp/hr battery. A 800W inverter installed in my van. And have a very noisy 3 phase generator as further backup. Also have gas cooking, both hob and oven.

Does anyone know which kind of gas hot water heaters work without electricity? Ours is a Rheem and doesn't seem to. I don't know if it's possible to do it manually, I should check the manual.

I think I heard that some brands don't need electricity to get started?

This is true, ours doesn't which is why we bought it. Um, I can't remember the name brand (one of the main ones) but not all models do in any case.

michaelmurfy: Oh welcome back TimA.

In the Christchurch Quakes I was at work for pretty-much 2 weeks (on generator power at the Unleash data centre) - the Espresso maker and sandwich press (for cooking our emergency supply of canned spam) was very handy.

I assume the Spam came from the email servers in the datacenter?

Wish I'd thought to ask about it when we got ours installed. Not sure it's worth replacing the unit for this functionality. I've only had to have one cold shower in recent memory but still...

Most gas hot water cylinders don't need electricity to operate. Also Bosch make instant gas heaters that don't require power to operate. But their temp regulation and water heating capacity compared to the electronicly controlled models is poor.

If gas hot water without any electricity is important then get a Rheem stellar outdoor gas storage cylinder. Sure it will cost a bit more than a cheap instant gas heater. But you get good temp regulation, good water flow, and far more energy efficient than any non electronic instant gas water heater. and only takes about 20 min to reheat if you manage to run it out of hot water.
