Bung: The salt is used to backflush the softening unit. This is probably not fitted to Aus/NZ models so the salt might never be used.

Not according to Meile, they state its used to soften the water.

If you look on the Miele NZ Q&A  for dishwashers you'll find the following

"In Australia, we recommend the use of coarse rock salt, which is available at supermarkets. Salt is required for the water softener to reactivate the resin, so it can again soften hard water entering the machine to prevent limescale build up in the machine."

the salt itself doesn't do the softening there's an ion exchange unit.

The hardest Wellington area water is in Waterloo and that would be in the middle of the lowest setting in the dishwasher. On the lowest setting the salt refill light is disabled as it isn't required.

Thanks for finding that, we are indeed on the lowest setting, and it takes about a year to go through a kilo of salt, I also remember they said salt is used in the gentle wash to stop streaking on glassware although we dont use that very often.
