If you don't know what I mean when I say "Wire the components in series". Have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Series_and_parallel_circuits  It is important you make the correct type. Also I can't see any problem with what you are wanting to make. As the output of the little power supply is current limited. And the voltage is well within the range of SELV (safety extra low voltage). So you don't need to be an electrician to work with it.

As for the speedtest - Im guessing UFB isn't available where you live? Also have a look in the Full flavour forum on GZ. They are getting over 800Mbit.

Thanks for that last one, Aredwood. Sorry about delay in getting back, but I found a genuine B&D part in the US for $6.85 plus freight, but it's only a 110v model and will need a 240-110 adapter. Far as I can tell this'd set me back $60-$80 in NZ, so it's not an economical solution. I asked the same US outfit to quote me a 240-110 adapter but they didn't reply, so I'll probably go down the Jaycar track if I can find the right model, plus your resistor.

Cheers :-)

Have a look on trademe ect for a cheap stepdown transformer. A 100W rated one will be plenty for what you want. Otherwise find one of those old "Shaver sockets" That you often see is 80s era bathrooms. As they have a small stepdown transformer inside them. Sparkies are ripping them out all the time. So if you ask nicely they will probably give you some for free.

Ive tried a shaver socket before on a small plugpack. It wasnt happy running all the time, and would cut out after about 45 mins till it cooled for a while.

Yeah the first one should work. As for the other 2, make sure you get the polarity right. And you would still need to do the light bulb trick as current limiting. (light bulb between DC-DC stepdown and battery).

The second two are a very much cheaper option at $10 - $12, so if one of them would work, I'm inclined to go for it.

I mean, the B&D drill is around 8-9 years old, so it'd be more sensible to put any major outlay into a new chargeable drill.

But 'step-up' or 'stepdown'? Or doesn't it matter?
