the stuff he does to me is impossible.

so i don't know what to make of it. there are some explanations
- camera editing
- actors all set up (but how to explain flying etc)
- really amazing illusions
- he has mastered e=mc2

dclegg: I quite enjoyed a show called Breaking Magic. It presents the magic, but also explains the science behind the tricks. Perfect for those of us who watch these things and like to figure out how the illusion was actually pulled off.

Some of you are missing my point. I am all for skill but take the one where he apparently goes through glass. Not hard when there is a hole in said window and you have a hired mob outside going, "Wow/Unbelievable etc etc". Any of us could do that with no training whatsoever.

And there are plenty of others like that to the extent that you can't tell what is skilful and what is a downright fraud.

That trick is somewhat similar to the one where he puts his hand through the glass counter, as the whole glass moves in the frame to display a hole. The one in the shop front window though must have required a bit of construction work before hand. They are illusions for TV, that is all. The video of the one where he is 'levitating off the side of the double decker bus looked so fake to me.

Sleight of hand, performances in front of live audiences - happy to watch these as takes real skill. Staged actors pretending to look surprised, mixed in with clever editing, doesn't interest me.

This is exactly my feeling. I also hate the way he presents it, "I'm so cool and amazing, look at me being awesome". I think I first saw him on Never Mind the Buzzcocks a couple of years ago and it put me right off ever watching any of his shows.

The explanations in that link are just plain bollocks. eg unliftable: there is no electromagnet etc its just basic physics. when Dynamo gets the strongman to lift him he puts his hands under the persons elbows. There is no way you can lift a person off the floor by the armpits if you cant bend your elbows (without a really big counterweight..so perhaps Beyonce might be able to)

as for the explanation of "a 3D projector" from where? the future?

Yes Dynamo is a bit of a tosser but his slight of hand is very good, some of the tricks where the camera just moves away at the right time do piss me off though. If you need camera tricks you may as well not do the trick.

The walking on water trick at the end of the series required 8 helicopters painted the colour of the sky? Really? I literally LOL'd at that. Good luck having 8 helicopters flying high enough to not be heard.

Mythbusters "running on water" myth gets you half way to Dynamo's version without helicopters.

The electromagnet is classic too.. Anyone tried carrying around an electromagnet and power source strong enough to give the effect in the video? You'd need a car battery at least. That trick is simple physics for sure. Note how he leans in to the person for the first pick up, then stays out for the second.

floydbloke: Quite enjoyed some of his shows in the first series but for a skeptic like me it's becoming too far fetched to believe there are no special effects or camera tricks involved so I no longer watch it.

Likewise. I do enjoy the tricks that I can't figure out but some of them - once you click to how it's done, they just seem cheap & tawdry. Don't get me wrong, he's damn good at it, but at the end of the day you're kidding yourself if you think he doesn't use stooges or multiple takes of things.

I honestly had a guy at work try to tell me the dude is actually really magic. *facepalm*

Criss Angel does the same thing with a vending machine. Your never see the hand go in.
But watch the top of the glass carefully and you can see it's scrolling up/down, and that's why the hand is always hidden/covered.
