Satch: Wrong. If you don't hit the $60 threshold then no duty or GST will be payable. Shoes and other items that attract duty are no different to non duty items in terms of the threshold. It's just these items reach the threshold at lower prices.

That would certainly explain why I've never been asked to pay GST/duty :)

I'm pretty sure you are right. Customs don't collect if the total payable is less than $60. For goods which don't attract duty, and only have GST on them, this means the threshold is $400. For goods with duty it depends on the applicable rate for that item, but from memory for clothes and shoes the threshold is effectively around $225. More details are here:

This is 100% correct - mens and womens clothes/shoes have 10% duty + 15% GST. The threshold is therefore lower. I'm pretty sure kids clothes are 0% duty though. The full list is available on the customs website above. You used to have to calculate it yourself before they launched the whatsmyduty site :)

The reason you only get charged sometimes on items that should always be charged duty is it is completely random.

Customs brings in thousands of items every day and doesn't have the time or resources to check every single item for duty.

I remember once when I bought in $3000 worth of hockey gear which should have hit me with massive duty and it got missed but the skates that came through the same day got hit with duty, i was so relieved.

Well I guess I was lucky, the shoes turned up this evening and no duty charges.
I guess it's like 4possm says, they don't have time to check every package so just pick at random.

we're regular to buy shoes from asos. never had "problems"... but we never buy over $100 for two pairs in total :)

We all need shoes and NZ has no significant shoe industry to protect. Seems bizarre.

Quite so.

I purchased some New Balance trainers at a very top end Mall in Jakarta (definitely genuine not knock offs) for $65 or so equivalent.

Same shoes in NZ? $225. Made in Vietnam.

I've come to the conclusion that there is no logic employed in the duty rates. Jewelry has duty - watches don't. Adult clothing has duty - kids clothes don't. Here's a good one - ceramic tiles: mosaic 0%, other 5%. LOL

Some times but I suspect the ones that the WH sells are the ones I buy.. I did buy a pair of New Balance black walk shoes the other day at Rebel Sports for $77. I checked them on Amazon and after exchange conversion and postage via YouShop they would have cost about $25 more..

Agreed. I am actually tempted to write to John Key and ask him to specifically explain the 10% on shoes, just to see what he says!

More than ten years ago a friend sent me an expensive gift that was about 1000usd. Since he did not want that to go missing he declared the full price. When it arrived to nz I received a letter asking me to pay a three figure number. While I was contemplating what to do, ringing up NZ custom and trying (naively) to persuade them that this was a gift so I don't need to pay, it was deliverd to me. I've never received another notice of this although I did not pay. I find it very strange.
