This is an issue between a buyer and seller, not the agent .

Perhaps trademe should be a bit more proactive but how far do they go?

Logically, as far as Ebay who offer proper backing for buyers.

I think he means that because it costs $45 or something to file a case at the Disputes Tribunal, it does not make economic sense to take further action over something under $50. You can only report the seller to the Commerce Commission for them to take different actions. They won't help you get your money back, they will only issue advice to/sanction the seller for breaches of legislation. You have to take the legal action to get your money back yourself.

If you buy stuff, even if it's $1, if it doesn't show up or something's wrong you usually get a refund very quickly (within a couple days).

I use Ebay all the time, postage is great too. Plus items are cheaper than here and you can get items that are not available here with free shipping. The backup Ebay + Paypal gives is amazing compared to Trademe, if the item doesn't turn up, faulty or not as described a refund or another item is shipped.

Haven't had an issue yet, compare that to Trademe where I've lost $100+ where items don't turn up or faulty and not support at all from the seller. Good luck following this up. Email Trademe is a waste of time, they may ban the seller on rare occasions but they just setup another account and you're still out of pocket.

Trademe replied, they said they'd contacted the seller but it was best for me to continue to talk to them and work things out. Not sure I can be bothered.

As a trademe seller of various electronic stuff,

I think that firstly, if I had been the one to have sold it, that I would refund it without question. Happy customer, valuable product feedback (if it can be returned for investigation all the better), not risking negative feedback (indeed, the opposite), these are things worth more than the few dollars the product cost.

But secondly, that many of the sellers of cheap electronic type stuff from China don't care in the slightest and that you are lucky you got any response out of them at all.

And thirdly, since you bought on Trade Me, you can edit your feedback (one-time-only) if you felt so inclined. But again, the big sellers (much bigger than I) of this type of stuff have such large sales that they don't much care about a few negatives.

When you buy from the cheapest seller on trademe you get this. The problem with trademe is they make it hard to see feedback on the product vs the seller and to find other sellers that have the same item but better customer service.

I generally try to buy from the 2nd, 3rd or 4th cheapest to avoid the race to the bottom for local sellers of imported tat.

I had this problem with dick smiths on some of their own house brand screwdrivers, which were about $20 for a set. One of them broke due to a manufacturing defect in the metal. They told me they only had a 3 month warranty (although not stated on the box). $20 was cheaper than what other retailers sold them for, so it was to be expected that they wouldn't be as good a quality, and that the warranty and CGA period would be less. But they did eventually replace them, but they broke again, so I put it down to getting what you pay for.

If you are buying cheap chinese hings like thermometers, I think you are better to get them off ebay or deal extreme, as the sellers tend to be much better than some in NZ, as if you have a problem they will refund or send you a replacement, as they don't want a chargeback or bad feedback. Some of the cheap trademe sellers are simply reselling things they have purchased overseas from these websites anyway, so their margins are pretty thin, and in a way I feel sorry for them and wonder why some even bother especially with the CGA.

Can't speak for others, but for me, it's a very small amount of pocket money, but I get to justify wasting days of my free time (or, procrastinating time) trolling around Taobao looking for interesting things, I get to indulge my natural tendency to hoard shiny objects, and since I already have a business it is no extra work really to roll it into that for purposes of GST and tax which I need to do anyway.

The thread is about the principle of it - just because it's cheap can it be crap with no warranty.

The same item is sold by many sellers, I chose the most reputable. I could've saved a dollar or two buying from ebay.

I'll replace it with a $70 system I'll get from Amazon.
