Between Sep 2014 and Nov 2014, we spent nearly two grand on my late cat Blackie. The largest single bill was $686.

I have three dogs and all are insured, so that is just over $1,500 a year for a start!

We had one who died from cancer about 18 months ago and spent thousands but the insurers reimbursed 85% of that.

The short answer to your question is probably 'whatever it takes'.

Pretty much whatever it costs to keep the cats healthy .. ours used to have terribly urinary problems, change of diet fixed it (Royal Canin urinary control S/O biscuits from the vet, not had a problem in years now)

Do you guys let you cats graze or do they have set meal times ?  If we leave food out one of our cats will just sit there and gorge herself till she is sick and just get fat!  So we just do food in the mornings and food at night in set sizes ... does seem to be better for her as she's far more trim n lean than most other podgie cats I see :-)
The side effect of "meal times" is that it's easy to get them in overnight (we don't let them out at night as they'd just kill every Morpork and kiwi that opens it's beak!)

Oriphix: Had my dogs teeth cleaned cost around $600 didn't even think about it.

Went to buy some shirts had to think for like 30 minutes.

You should shop around for dental...you will be surprised at the huge variations in charges.

You should always treat your vet like you would to purchase any commodity....shop around.

I just leave food out for the cat and he eats whenever he wants some, not fat at all and does not over eat.

Loki comes when he is called 9/10 times so have no problem getting him in at night :)

I'd have to agree with this!

We buy Hills Science Diet buscuits for our 4 cats (Gareth who?)...

At the vets we use to go to in Ashburton (and this was part of a large chain of vet clinics) it was always the same price, never on special, but after you purchased the 12th bag the next one was free.

We shifted to the Hutt Valley and, of course, moved to a much closer vet clinic smile. The regular price for the same product is $10 cheaper per bag, 9-times-out-of-10 it is on special - so usually 15-to-40% off the usual price AND we now get the 11th bag free! And it is a smaller chain of vet clinics. Some of the price varience could be justified, but not passing on specials which the clinic in Ashburton must have been getting from the supplier... Definitely pays to shop around!!

BTR: Crystals in the bladder is a common issue and is quite often related to the food your cat is eating. Lots of water, changing food brand and patience fixed this issue with my cat, the vet said it happens a lot when cats are feed a brand of food which I won't fully name but it starts with P.

I only feed my cats meat, and hardly any of this dry stuff .

I was getting the Royal Canin stuff as well, but the vets were never open at a convenient time, or I'd forget, so did switch over to the supermarket premium brands. Did so with a bit of apprehension at first, not wanting to go for another round of crystal cleansing. Haven't noticed any ill effect for the last 3 years.

Fed twice daily - morning with biscuits and fancy feast mashed together, evening with veal and biscuits, again, mashed together. The cat has a tendency to guts it down, and then barf it back up - moreso with the evening feed,  and then glare at the upchuck with some disdain. However, doesn't get any more. The chooks effectively  deal with the resultant mess.foot-in-mouth

I'd spend relative to the likelyhood of a good outcome - for my pet. Spending tons when the pet will have a crappy life afterward, I'd make a tough choice then. We have spent well over 15K on my German Shepherd who has allergies, plus swimming for his hips etc.

whatever it cost, we spent thousands (maybe 8k?) trying to save our dachshund last year, we loved our boy so much but we couldnt save him in the end, still heart broken over his death

we would do it again for our other dog, our pets are our kids so whatever it cost to get them healthy

LOL.  One of our cats actually runs when you call him — very un-cat like.   The other is more typical.  It scratches at the door, but when you open it, the cat just stands there with a 'you think I'm going to go through that door just because you opened ot?' bored look on its face.  We have to leave the door open and walk away, and when enough time has passed for the cat to think it was his idea and not ours, it will saunter in.

Oh, and the running cat can let its self in our front door if it is unlocked.  I'll have to post a photo of the mess it has made of the wood when it has jumped and missed the handle.

There have been occasions where we have got up in the morning, and found the door wide open (the bugger never closes it when it lets its self in)

Whatever it takes to maintain a relatively good quality of life

And I mean "relative" to a range of aspects, not the least being age. We're at that horrible juncture right now. Our oldest Berner (9 years 2.5 months old) stopped eating last weekend. We have spent a small amount investigating, and currently awaiting biopsy results from Massey. It's expected to come out tonight, so this is turning out to be an extremely long day at work. The prevailing preliminary diagnosis is cancer, but there's a slim chance of the mass being granuloma. Whatever the report from Massey our goal is to spend whatever we can to achieve the goal I mentioned earlier.

Disclaimer: "... a small amount..." is small because my partner is a vet nurse. Otherwise that would be something other than "small". She left her 13 year long IT career to pursue her passion in working with animals. I am eternally grateful for that!

This happened to my Newfie, he stopped eating and completely changed his behavior to the point hr wouldn't even acknowledge us. Was really sad.
