My whole lawn is tall fescue, makes a nice rich green, hard wearing, and drought resistant lawn. But if it's not want you want then it's a weed. My only recommendation when buying grass seed it to give the 'mixed' varieties commonly found in the supermarket/hardware shop a big miss. Go to a specialized turf place and get some proper seed, it will be cheaper for one, and they can help identify the best variety for your situation. Sadly in this case I think the only option is to roundup the whole area and start again.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Side question, if you are to roundup the whole area and 'start again', do you need to turn the soil over or get more topsoil before re-seeding? I've half nuked my lawn this summer already due to weeds and clover, the roundup works great when there's little rain :D

Also has anyone tried roll-on lawn, or is that a lot more expensive?

Read the label but pretty sure roundup doesn't stay active in the soil. But I would recommend getting at least a bit of new topsoil so you have a bit of a clean slate to work with.

We're about to convert a parking area at our house from gravel into lawn, and after a load of research decided that we'll use woolgro. It's cheaper than ready lawn, and more reliable than self sowing. Just need to keep it wet and that's it really.

Its poor mans grass, its not the nice soft stuff that rich people have.... I wish I had rich mans grass.

You would typically roundup the lawn, let it die back, dig it over and give it a week for weeds to start to grow, roundup those, dig over. You might roundup that and dig over again. Then spread the seed, cover lightly or rake over so birds don't eat it, then keep it damp for at least a week to let it germinate. This isn't practical in summer, it's best done in autumn when there's rain and no water restrictions. You'll probably want a series of timers and sprinklers, which I can potentially loan people in Wellington.

Roll out lawn can be good, but if it doesn't take root it can die. You can also end up with gaps between the rows if it's not watered well. A friend did a small section of it and it worked well.

The council dug a big soak-a-way in our lawn a year or so back (not really our lawn as the outside two metres is council owned). They sowed new grass when they finished, and it looks quite like the above. It grows much quicker than the old lawn around it, and is a darker green, and looks bloody horrible!
