rayonline: Response rate to get the fire trucks out - eg. Saving lifes, helping the sick. Protecting the NZ border. Administering immigration, overseas education qualifications, managing the pension process for those that are entitled for it. Policing financial companies. For companies if you can charge them more you do it. If others do it you follow suite.

Serious question, are you stoned right now?

Nothing you have posted here makes any sense to read. Perhaps actually try to write a story rather than smashing out random thoughts.

As generally there are bonuses based on it, and you also have the sense of achieveing something, furthuring yourself while staying in the same place and in general growing something, yes. Working at a place full of bumbling old people with no drive is the most taxing thing ever, even if it is relativly profitable.

The reliance of things like st johns on "volunteers" to do work is IMO offensive. It should be a proper business, funded by the government properly if people want to have a free service which is it quite clear that is expected in NZ.

I (unlike you apparently) dont judge my success as an employee by the bonus I get every 3 months, or by the $$$ that are deposited in my bank account fortnightly by my employer, and I certainly dont see my bank balance as the definition of my 'furthering myself' and 'growing something'.... Neither does my employer even though they're a profit driven company. Having a life is a LOT more than the $$$$ you have or can have.

That you consider it offensive to volunteer for organisations that help others with no profit motive tells me lot about the country/world you want to live in. Thankfully that's not a country or world that most New Zealanders (and human beings for that matter) would choose...

Perhaps the OP could clarify his/her question?

Otherwise the OP is asking for the Meaning of Life, The Universe, and Everything.

I will try.

In the private sector, I don't feel that I am contributing much. Sure I have my JD and I do my job but overall once everyone there does their bit what do we achieve? People might talk about power companies increasing costs, employing door knocker agencies etc but then again the some of these people work for these organisations and implement those things. If our electronic devices are becoming more efficient and we are insulating our homes, they would just find other ways to increase revenue. So it is just about money. People spend many years working, do people really believe what the organisation is doing. One could be working for the IT department or the marketing team for a loan shark or those finance companies that went belly up... it is was all legal. After all each employee is contributing to the organisation so they can reach their intended goal (whatever that is).

Many of the public sector jobs you refer to are completely or heavily funded by the government, which gets it's money from taxes.

If private companies didn't make a profit, they wouldn't pay taxes and many things would have no funding at all.

Maybe a more accurate way to say is - do people in general genuinely enjoy their job?

If one worked as a medic or a receptionist at at local medical centre they can certainly see value in their work. Likewise, life coach, fitness instructors, teachers and nurses. But many of the essential jobs are clerical workers, sale reps, finance managers, frontline staff like customer service on phone or in person.

also many of those services are effectively monopolies, and don't necessarily have any incentive to be run optimally

At last you came up with a meaningful question.

You want to know if people working for a company enjoys their job? Many do. I do.

You want to do know why people working for a company wouldn't instead work for a non-profit and be happy knowing they made a difference? Everyone makes a difference. It doesn't matter if they work for Big Corporation or for a small non-profit.

Everyone is important.

I don't think it makes any difference whether you work in the public/non-profit sector, or in the private/for profit sector - if you hate your job, that's bad news for you and your employer.
