I would expect an answer along the lines of "we don't sell Roku's but we have Apple TV and it works like this..."

Similar is when I'm in the a supermarket and ask for help locating an item. The staff proceed to lead me around the aisles I've already looked in hoping to stumble across it. I can do that myself. I want someone to say "aisle 7, bottom row" etc...

Theres no incentive to learn anything in these stores now.  Not on the wages they get.  Do Roku even get retailed over here?  Last few Ive bought have had to come in from overseas (I still use a WDTV myself).

Clearly there was no incentive to learn anything at school either...!

True Confessions

I have never heard of a Roku (until I Googled it 2 minutes ago) and I don't work for Harvey Norman.

But do you work in a job where you might reasonably be expected to know what such an item was?

If you are, say, a surgeon then it would not be surprising that you did not know.

If you work in a shop selling TV's, computers etc etc then maybe it is more the sort of thing you could be expected to know?

Look not everyone is lucky enough to get a job at McDonalds and get training and a chance for a career, some people have to work at the DSEs and Harvey Normans of the world.  Give them a break.

Umm... I have no idea what a Roku is.

You can't expect everyone to know the 999,999 items around the world esp if they don't sell it

However, it is not a secret - even I, a 47 year old who had typists and secretaries when he left university and for whom the invention of the modern mobile phone was an historical event not something read about in Wikipedia, have seen articles about it. A young buck of the 100% computer age who understands all these gizmos probably would be likely to have at least heard of it....

Of course, I am assuming reading and assimilating information is a common skill.

It's not a particularly sarcastic comment, the McDonalds Corporation does invest in its staff (http://www.aboutmcdonalds.com/mcd/corporate_careers/training_and_development/hamburger_university.html).  Big box retail has no driver to.

Oh I guess you didn't know that Harvey Nornan is a franchise model? Where the only way you can become a franchisee / proprietor is by working your way up from the sales floor... Which, incidentally is a similar model to McDonalds, just without the salty snacks. I think this has been covered in Geekzone before?
Noel Leeming used to be franchised back in the day too, but things changed prior to the Gresham Group buying them.

especially if you are going in on the weekend.  The weekend is when they have the 'extra' staff on, who are most likely to be 16-17 year old guys/girls who work there for 1 day a week on a saturday or sunday to earn a bit of extra money.  HN etc will barely give them training on their own products, let alone products that doesn't even sell in NZ.

Those two things aren't the same.  It sounds like Harvey Norman is just letting "the cream rise to the top".
