Rest assured, I wont be bailing up children in the street. I'm not a monster :).

I did send emails to both publications expressing my displeasure (in a fairly rational way), and asking them how I can stop receiving their publication.

I'm genuinely interested to know what their legal obligations are here.

God do I understand what you are saying, it's not to bad this time of year but heading towards September onwards our letter box gets filled with junk mail each day (I am talking about so full that there is very little room for anything else).

The ones that bug me the most however are companies like vodafone that send out oversized marketing (talking A3 size).  The last way to win customers is to send out really dumb sized marketing c**p.

It is ironic that these telcos say that they are switching from paper to emails for their invoices, and one of their justifications is that they are saving the environment by cutting down on paper use. Yet those same companies cram your mailbox full of paper to try and sell you those products, and it has gotten worse over recent years.

floydbloke: I know for the most part everyone hates junk mail but do spare a thought for the thousands of teenagers who are able to earn some money this way, and at the same time learn some work ethic at a young age.  And certainly in my son's case they get instructed to adhere to 'no junk mail' signs in accordance with Lias' post above.

They get paid pretty poorly, as they are contractors not employees, and it's nowhere near minimum wage if you translate it into hours effort.

Especially since John Key did away with the tax exemption for kids earning less than $9,800 a year.  So they're even being taxed on it!

May as well get used to that nice and early.

What I dont get is that there is a law about junk mail that promises penalties to companies that do it, and the name of the paper is the north shore times advertiser, so its clearly advertising material yet they get away with putting it in the mailbox and no one gives a crap because its a "newspaper" - Well then harvey norman may as well call their crap a newspaper and stuff it in everyones mailbox that has no circulars on it too.

tardtasticx:
ilovemusic: lucky you.
for over a year the delivery people have been too lazy to deliver the free community papers in my area.

I don't think its laziness. More likely just uneconomical.
When I done it like 7 years ago atleast, I got paid $12 a week to deliver to over 200 homes 3 times a week. How it's legal, I don't know. But I can guarantee they wouldn't get paid much more after all this time either.

Totally agree with this.

We had our 11 year old son do it last year in the hope he would learn an little about working for some extra money and it was a complete joke. In the end he was earning $1.50 an hour and was regularly abused by householders on his route for following the simple rules about 'who to give what to' as described elsewhere in this thread.

He quickly learned there are fair better ways of earning some extra money and gave it up after a month. Now the locals are complaining because no-one has taken the job on and no papers are being delivered.

It hasn't been called that for years.

It was when I was arguing with them, and shows how much of a look I give it between the pile of them in the mail box and the grass verge on recycling day.

andrewNZ: And I intend to make it stop, I may resort to bailing up the delivery person if I can't find a formal avenue.

Rant over.

Now, what are my options around opting out, and what are their obligations around respecting that.

Issue them with a Trespass Notice: http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-community/trespass-notices

Trespassing is more than someone coming onto the property, it is them causing something (in this case, a junk newspaper) to come onto the property.  Once issued to the company they will be trespassing each time they leave a newspaper.  It will open their eyes a lot more than a polite cease and desist letter.

This letterbox belongs to an advertising agency. Verging on double-standards in my view.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Not all ad agencies produce mailers.  Could be a TV ad agency.

Quite true, but they're in the same business of forcing their customer's 'information' down our throats so I do feel there's a sniff of hypocrisy there.
