How does that compare with a jolly man in a red suit dishing out pressies to kids.

I have played Santa twice and found it a really rewarding experience. On the Chatham Islands, the look on the kids faces was priceless - they really believed! Please don't destroy or belittle the hopes and dreams of children.

I have to admit I love Christmas, I'm just a big kid. My 15 year old has his little tree up already, with his military models in it! Plus framed picture of fluffy and two beaded flowers that I made. I might take the flowers back and sell them at my market stall! His miniature tanks are looking really good in the tree! I loved decorating my mobile phone shop in Aussie. It was on a corner, and I used to love watching the little kids being dragged away from the window display by their cranky mums! (By that stage my children were mostly teenagers, so I was over the toddler bit.) Anyway, we never had Santa at our house, I don't believe in lying to our children, same goes for easter bunny and tooth fairy. Believe me, our kids never lacked presents, easter eggs etc. (That's what Nanny was for!) The oldest child once did the tooth fairy bit for youngest brother. They are 'twins', 8 years apart exactly. When I sold my shop I asked for my purple angel back. My friend who bought the store said to go and help myself! So I was very restrained, just took purple fairy who lives on the fake wall in our loungeroom!

Oh yes, and when I was a kid growing up in Sydney, the displays were out of this world. Santa grottos, clockwork figurines in DJ's windows etc.

Even the five hour trip into Sydney on a stinking hot christmas eve was part of the tradition.. The last tradition we have is that I buy or make a special tree decoration for each child (plus me) each year. (My deco's are getting pinched as each child leaves home!)

So when do we feel retailers can put up Christmas decor without feeling the Geekzone wrath? I think mid-November is plenty (this coming from someone who does all shopping on Christmas Eve

Can't wait - we even had a dry run for our christmas pudding last evening; tiramasu, not very traditional but super delicious!

It's all about the money and in-your-face marketing nowadays and nothing about values, tradition etc.

I'm doing a lot of shopping online now and it's really good! I'm also finding cheap and unique stuff and the whole experience is quick, painless and allows much more time to do stuff I really want. Surprisingly pleasant.

Shops are good for one thing, good to rush in there and oogle over the product and tell the salesman "*expletive removed* YOU" who tails you right to the end of the shop and blurts "can I help you" the minute you open a fridge door.

My "Christmas" shopping was done near end of financial year in all the super sales. ;-D

I cannot wait for a slump and to watch all these fancy "what can I buy" shops just perish he he he he.

Well, as a dear sweet 'expletive added' AUSSIE saleswoman (ooh), I feel terrible if you come into my shop and I ignore you and you walk out without me saying hello and being friendly to you............

. And I would hate it if my employer went bust... Who would pay for my SAnyo M1? Just joking. I happen to like my bosses very much!

Oh, by the way I am not at all upset at being ribbed for my nationality... And I am not being mean, trolling or anything else. Just my warped sense of humour... (Or scents of humar, as my son so aptly wrote in his party invites to his mates when he was a child...)

I reckon Pebbles will give us all a run for our money with her uni degree!

Anyway, I am going to Aussie for christmas to probably 40 degree heat, bushfires and drought on the farm...

Good thing I fly out an ChristmasDday. That way I miss all the Christmas shopping stuff and go straight on to the post-Christmas sales!!! LOL

Oh yeah, and I have got my husband convinced that he is the head of the household! (That way, all the problems are his fault.)

And in the words of the great Larry Norman's song-
   Santa Claus is coming and the kids are getting greedy
   Yeah yeah it's christmas time
   They know it's on the streets cos they've seen it on the tv
   yeah yeah it's christmas time

Or something like that.
