I think this is really awesome. Makes it way easier to get to Austin and other parts of the mid/south-east.

mad01: I was hoping for New York...

With what aircraft? It's not possible due to distance.

I guess you're right, I'm probably living in the future. But if Qantas can fly from Sydney to Dallas direct, it must be pretty similar to AKL-JFK?

Anyway I'm not sure I care if I going to the east coast to change flight at LAX or Houston (apart maybe from the fact that AirNZ is usually better than the american partners and you get to fly with them longer...)

Nope SYD - DFW is around 400km less than AKL - JFK. Yes it can be flown, but it was more my point that Air NZ don't have an aircraft suitable to fly 14,219km from AKL to JFK. It's further than the 77E range and right on the limit of the 77W.

Also if you're a space nut then the Johnson space center at Houston is a must do. Amazing, and pretty accessible too. I could have spent days there;)

Fair enough.
In any cases I'm after CHC-YUL direct so I think I'll be waiting a while...

If it is half as good as Kennedy in Florida, then heck yeah!

I wonder also if as has been suggested with the South American route Air New Zealand are looking at the prospect of Auckland being a hub for passengers from Asia travelling onto the Americas.
