Two constants in life, death and taxes unless you are a farmer or an accountant you can avoid the taxes

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

In the long term I believe it's better to shop here in NZ. Will save money overall as there will be less spent on antacids and headache medication.

Oh wow, the same thing just happened to me this week! Mine was $380 plus $61 Youshop charges.
I protested but then read on the website that you have to include the cost of getting it to NZ.
Ended up over $100 on top.
Lesson learned I guess... When using Youshop keep the total spend under $300

nathan: Get over it or leave the country to find a less taxed regime, or be happy that your tax is paying for schools, hospital, police, old age pension, prisons and defence.

Good point! We always need more schools, hospitals, police, old age pension, prisons and defence so why don't we all just pay 26% on everything? What a lovely society this would be.

15% tax - as other have pointed out the rest are set charges. The more over the $400 you are then the lower that percentage would be.

Personally I think those set charges are a huge rip off, but the tax isn't.

I also think that the shipping should not be included - that part is just a greedy money grab.

And I think that the $400 / $60GST is too low and should be raised.

You got caught out because you had not done your homework. It certainly stings when you aren't expecting it, but you know for future imports.

Yeah, thats one thing I like about shipito, you can request that they de-consolodate packages as well, so that things you were not expecting the seller to ship together (like a prime and a non prime amazon seller I chose for that reason) can become 2 parcels that you can send to seperate recipiants.

if you don't pay your tax, I won't want to pay my tax, Mr Smith across the road won't want to pay his tax and then the system falls apart

I really struggle to understand why this thread even exists

you could protest just refusing to pay and leaving your goods there

No one like paying tax, but its the caring sharing society we live in called New Zealand, where we need that tax money to redistribute to those who can't or won't work.

To be fair the OP didn't understand the rules around imports and that is why they got caught out. I think they understand those rules better now. smile

Don't mind paying the tax, I protested initially because I was ignorant of the rules but once I got put straight I have no problem with it, it's there in black and white.
Though I wasn't aware of it at the time but my mistake

What annoys me so much about this is I did do my homework and I still got caught out. I am not angry at the authorities but at myself. The package was shipped privately and the sender thought she would do me a favour by sending it 'priority'. I thought I had allowed for enough margin but the postage was higher than I anticipated. She couldn't have known. So the GST came to $65.70 instead of $60. That $5.70 cost me $112. Yes, you win some and you lose some but this still seems a little unfair, especially to those who actually do play by the rules all the time (I'm not claiming to be one).

I wasn't advocating not paying tax, I was suggesting paying more tax. As long as it's the same for everyone.

Just think of it has a donation to NZ schools and NZs health system etc. That may make you feel better about it.

You have to be really careful when buying overseas, and look at the type of item being purchased, as some have different levels of duties on them. So it isn't just about the purchase price and shipping, but also the type of item.  But it is a learning experience, and will mean that you shouldn't get caught out again.

I may have missed something, but what did you actually pay? Did you pay for the priority shipping, or was this a free upgrade?

While values may be attributed differently for private sales, for most purchases it's the transaction value which is applied.
