You can buy pre made bread dough for your burgers, then bake it yourself. This is very common and provides excellent quality bread. I believe subway for example do this. Ask Yarrows if they can help - I heard they sold a pie machine and you purchased the ingredients off Yarrows to then produce high quality fresh pies.

You're not on Atlantis anymore, Duncan Idaho.

Know a busniess lady. She is awesome cook. Likes to cook and does it extremely well. She has decided one day to quit the well paid job in the CBD to start manufacturing frozen food (e.g. dumplings).
Costs went over the roof very much soon with all certificates / industrial food processors / fridges / workplace / business insurance etc.
I've heard that at some startup stage those expenses exceeded $100. Some of those were not anticipated at all.

On the other hand there was a documentary about popular Japanese one-man business who was making kind of donuts at the back of his house and was using old machine from his granddad. Never changed the cooking oil there - just adding. He said it added that flavour customers were after...... And customers were coming every day for years..

It depends on what you want to get out of the business, but in all likelyhood, no. There are so many costs in business that start up capital of $10k simply won't last -

The other thing to consider is what does "the business" expose you to -

If you need a premises, you will need (most likely) to lease it, that usually involves an obligation for a set period (12+ months) and most landlords will insist on personal guarantees, so no hiding behind a limited liability company for unpaid money if things don't work out. Unless you are obscenely lucky, the premises will have to be fitted out for your type of business, $10k won't get you far at all. If you are thinking of a "food caravan", even a cheap do-er upper will easily suck thousands of dollars in work to get it up to standard (councils are particularly anal about food hygiene and have strict standards about what can and can't be done).

You will need plant (making burgers, so at minimum a grill, chiller, bread baking oven, mixers and other assorted kitchen bits). I doubt $10k would cover all the plant requirements so you will potentially have to borrow money, another personal guarantee there.

Market research, advertising & promotion all costs money.

Even if you try and protect yourself with a LTD company, your $10k "business" could cost you everything, especially if you make a mistake and don't pay the IRD all their dues, they aren't renowned for their leniency.

If you have $10k burning a hole in your pocket, buy some shares
