Seems that once a parcel gets to a size they dont put it into bags it gets here a lot faster. Slowest seem to be the mid sized yellow padded bags.

It's worth remembering also that especially on Aliexpress, your order being "shipped", or even having a "tracking number" (about 80% of which are completely fictional or at best untrackable for small parcels I find), is no guarantee that the vendor has actually got the items, let alone packed or taken them to a post office.

Even for the more expensive shipping methods (DHL etc), particularly out of Shenzhen area in China being "shipped" likely means it's been handed to a freight handler and may well then pass through a couple of more handlers, and be driven into Hong Kong, before it even gets to the actual carrier (DHL etc).

Yeah. And there is always a chance that if you buy things they dont have and turns out they cant get then they will say its shipped and you have to wait and wait and then dispute it when nothing arrives. Found that extensivly on the sellers that sell all sorts of other crap like fingernail decorations and questionable adult toys alongside interesting electronic and PC things. Seems they just have all the photos, load all the things and have no clue what any of them are.

Whereas Ray Wu's LEDs on there has been perfect, helpful, and knows his stuff.

I took a small box into a China Post outlet in Shanghai, and it cost as much to send as it would to send it from NZ. Or to get a package sent from the US. It wasn't cheap, and it wasn't that heavy. I also read and spoke enough Chinese to know I wasn't being ripped off. They had price charts they showed me.

That is because you are not an exporter, it was just a one off parcel.

You have to go thru the shipping agents unless you are really big. They will sort stuff out into various destinations and bag it up. Once it is sent on its way from them they get back to you with the postal services tracking number. Depending on many things it may be china post, may go over the border to hong kong if its in shenzhen, it may go thru NL post or a couple of other european carriers who also operate out of china to make money on the way postal stuff works.

anyway I have an interesting experience. bought a very popular item around 1/10th the price here ... well over $1000 NZD for some brands

bought something on 02.5.15 - out of stock ... eventually "shipped 10.5.15"
I thought something was amiss as it hadn't arrived.
So checked the tracking ...
23.5.15 - Item received for processing [aka seller lied! - note they had 9 days to ship it otherwise order is cancelled]
03.6.15 - Item departed sorting hub (that is a full 11 days of processing)
07.6.15 - Item arrives in NZ
09.6.15 - Amazingly entering that code in the NZpost website gives the same details from 3.6.15 onwards ...

who knows when I'll get it ...

Same story here, We pay an arm and a leg for what we post inside and outside of NZ.

I used to work for an extremely large company that allowed for posting items via them at cost, Sent a switch to a rural location half way down the country I was quoted high $40s to post at post shop, Cost me $7.50 at work. Was quite a large and heavy box too, Rather difficult to carry.

so that you and I get a decent salary. the rich will always get richer, in NZ or in China. (in fact the rich in China is far richer than the ones here!)

but working in a Foxconn factory in China you get paid peanuts and work until you die. in NZ, you get paid $14.50 an hour and get smokos and Kiwisaver.

Reading James Sleeman’s post made me furious (see http://fortune.com/2015/03/11/united-nations-subsidy-chinese-shipping/ ).

As a business we definitely are not in the same playing field as those overseas companies.

We subsidise those companies from the “poor” countries by paying high courier fees to compensate NZ courier companies for having to deliver overseas packages free of charge plus we pay GST while overseas companies are exempt.

I can’t blame anyone for choosing to buy from overseas. I myself choose to buy from a New Zealand company and NZ made whenever possible.

What worries me is what the future holds. What will become of the NZ market? How many NZ companies will have to fold? One day we will wake up and discover we are all owned by overseas companies.

Not in the slightest correct. Courier companies do not deliver packages, national carriers do, such as NZ Post and China Post. DHL, Fast way etc are not UPU members.

This is why I prefer to buy from http://dx.com rather than Ali if they have what I need, with DX you are only dealing with one supplier rather than random little guys.
