nakedmolerat: I own a MacBook Air. I really like the fact that the apple is light up when you switch it on.

But does it make a nice satisfying crunch when you bite into it, or is it kind of soft and floury?

My apple of choice now is Ambrosia, probably the best tasting apple I have ever had

sbiddle: Eve are my favourite, however these can vary a little in quality. It's one of the few good apples IMHO that comes out of the Nelson area which is where they're all grown.

If you want good apples make sure you but Yummy brand, and avoid Countdown. There apples are so terrible you'd find pigs turn up their noses.

And as for those who say NZ apples are bad, that's entirely untrue. Brands like Yummy focus on domestic production so you're getting the best apples. They were also pioneers in CA in New Zealand - I ate a couple of Yummy Royal Gala's today and they were literally as fresh as one picked straight off a tree.

It's funny you said that about countdown. We bought a lot of fruits but I hate fruits so I don't eat everyday as I should. I bought 'Mahana' which was on sale for $1 for 1 kg in countdown and I love it! So I keep buying this brand for a month now but I found out it was just me that ate those apples at the moment. Maybe they taste bad but somehow this is the only apple I like. I used to work in Roxbrough in the summer and I know the local fruits quite well. I don't quite like the taste of royal gala.

Another vote for Eve. Crunchy, crisp and tangy. As with all apples, the fresher they are the better. Got some in Canada a week ago and the Eves were going flowery and had to be last years crop. Disappointed that some marketer had missed the boat, and presented an older apple that was past it's best!

i still miss the apples from my youth , The golden and red delicious apples were my favourite, seem to be gone now.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

The idea of fruit going 'crunch' is almost worse than vegetables going 'crunch'!

Quality can vary greatly though, even if always bought from the same shop.
Obviously the season affects this but I do wonder if the shops have them in storage for longer than they should at times.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Mahana Red is actually very similar to Eve (both are simply trademarks). They are both high coloured Braeburn apples that have a lot more red. Around the same time another very similar breed called Hillwell that was also very tasty, but this never took off.

Countdown don't refrigerate any of their stock so apples are always at room temperature which is really, really bad for any apples that have been in CA or had SmartFresh treatment as it causes the fruit to immediately start to break down at a very fast rate once it is back at room temperature.

(and for those wondering why I know about apples, basically 20 years of my life was spent in the produce industry!)

I like the Cox's Orange variety. But they are hard to find. They are an 'old' apple variety and only available for a few weeks each year. But as far as I'm concerned they are the best apple there is. It has a distinctive edge to the flavour. Almost fizzy orange......but apple.

Finally googled it for the first time ever. (I began eating these before there was an Internet - never thought to look them up).

Braeburn's and Lemonades.

Most Royal Gala's of late have been floury, and I hate floury apples. Though they could have been in the supermarket storage too long. As one commenter mentioned, they are a summer fruit, and best purchased then, I don't think they keep well. Braeburns seem to keep for quite a while in a crisp state.

I do have a golden delicious tree ( I think), Delicious when fresh, but don't keep well. But makes great Blackberry and Apple jam :-)

I generally eat an apple per day, all year. Happy to pay premium for imported apples in the off-season. however, given the number of dodgy floury apples of late, I'm soon tempted to slice and taste prior to purchase.
