As a sidebar I actually always look for the FB Twitter, Instagram as well.

I presume one also has to check Business Names as I assume , don't know the law here , that if I own the name "geekerzone" (i don't) ie pty ltd or registered name, you cant use it on a nz domain or .co.nz. ?

Generally registration is first come first serve, there are no restrictions (except for .nz launch there was a reservation/conflict process).

The DNC runs a dispute resolution service so that companies with rights to a name can dispute registrations and get assigned the domain. It costs like $2k so it's often actually cheaper to pay the domain squatter if you want a particular name that's already registered

loceff13: I can't think of any local .nz domain's to be honest. It hasn't really been adopted(other than brand protection) any more seriously than .kiwi etc

Not quite local, but I received an email today from Mega, advertising their .nz domain:

We would love to have you as a user, but we may close your account and delete any stored data (as specified in our Terms of Service) if you don't log in at https://mega.co.nz/, or our new domain of https://mega.nz/ within the next 30 (thirty) days.

I went with .nz to make email address that little bit shorter to say over the phone, or type out.
