I found the 13 hr clock was just too long, so stick with the 12. Maybe we should use 10 and make it metric ? :-)

n4: When you say 'NZ' uses the 12 hour clock, what does 'NZ' mean?

Have a look at your TV guide, bus times or parking tickets

Vacillation is my second-favourite 'totally innocent word that sounds really rude.' My favourite is defenestration.

Use and prefer 24 hour.

I am so excited to see what tomorrow's utterly trivial issue for discussion is...

Also, I use 12 hour 99% of the time, and always conversationally. I only use 24 hours for work-related communication, usually when there is a time zone difference too.

Since when have any of those been authorative guides as to what this countries "clock system" is?

I highly doubt that any of those people designing/producing those items would have said "Hmmm, what system does New Zealand offically use - 12 hour or 24 hour? Oh, apparently we officially use the 12 hour clock so we'd better use that in our publications!"

Actually if I go to the Auckland transport website, train times are 12 hr but school buses are 24hr.

I guess the point is there is no 'official policy position' and hence people use whatever they like, meaning in general they will stick with the traditional 12hr. Don't worry, eventually the immigrants will take over the country and we'll be 24hr.

PS I'm an immigrant :-)

I'm really interested, the people that say they use 24-hour clocks, do they actually say to people "I'll meet you there at eighteen hundred hours"?

Growing up in a military family, 24hr clock was all I knew for most of my childhood.  I stick with it whenever possible if only to maintain a small link with that military background.  :)

If you really want to get confused, try to figure out why Windows uses "AM" and "PM" in the US, but "a.m." and "p.m." in NZ. Apple does the same sort of thing except it's "AM/PM" vs "am/pm" there.

I am 100% unconfused by this.

They all mean the same thing.

But it also uses some other timezone rather than NZ time. Just a personal bugbear. I'll get over it :)

The easiest way to get over it would be to change the "Timezone" setting in your user options :)
