mattwnz: The problem in NZ is that there isn't any real indepth journalism or documentaries these days. There is a bit on Saturday or Sunday mornings, which are paid for by the platinum fund, because they don't get enough viewers. But no wonder the average kiwi is so unknowledgable about things.

This is actually a very good point. The Nation, which is publicly funded, is pretty in depth. There has also been the occasional NZ On Air funded documentary on Prime.
mattwnz: It is still a little bit light for my tastes. There is also Q&A on one, but that seems to be more about politics. But they aren't programs people would know about unless you seeked them out. I remember the old 1 hour documentaries, which aren't around anymore. You do get the odd one, but they tend to be privately done.
JimmyH: Al Jazeera isn't bad.
As for NZ TV News coverage - basically there isn't any.
An hour of shouty advertisements, occationally interrupted by advertorials and cat stories presented by a bland plastic duo with impossibly white teeth and carefully scripted one-liners. Bah!
Haven't watched a single episode of the 6pm faux-news, on either state telly or TVNZ, for well over three months now. Radio NZ, Al Jazeera, and online sources are where I go for news now.

xontech: This post coincides with me noticing over the past few weeks that TV1 news is now (may have been for some time and I haven't noticed) doing promos for upcoming shows masked as thinly veiled news items. Now that I've noticed it its really starting to pss me off.

alasta:
Unfortunately free to air television is a dying business model. Everyone here is always moaning about the quality of programming and also moaning about the ads which people now go out of their way to skip. You can't have it both ways.

But we are not missing Sky one bit, and haven't watched 6pm news for several years now as it's mostly full of fluff.
