I don't tend to buy high priced things from aliexpress.
The most expenses I have purchased was 2 x mini windows media box (atom/2gig ram/32 SSD). Priced at about 100US each.
Both machines worked out fine (using both on different tv's for netflix etc).

I would not buy android devices etc off there however.

Everything else has been screen protectors and phone cases and never had a problem with those, the screen protectors have saved me a couple of times.

I guess it really depends on what you buy, I just don't see the point in paying $40NZ for a screen protector when you can get the same glass screen protector from ali for under $5US.
Or $70 for a phone dock for my sony z3 when I can get them from ali for $10.

I am currently waiting on 1 x car camera that cost me under $20 US due to the app day they had
1 x iphone 6 battery case with a 7000mah battery
1 x nexus 5 battery case with 3000 or so mah battery

should be interesting to see how those turn out.

May I suggest the "7000mAh" could be a random number generated.

With Aliexpress purchases, if the seller ignores you I'd recommend you go straight to Aliexpress

Yes, I'll give him another 12 hrs of ignorance :)

The seller doesnt get paid until you ok the purchase, Aliexpress hold the money. If you start a dispute then you will get their attention. They will ask you what you want to pay, tell them and its usually done.

There has been a couple of times I have held up the payments from ali until I was happy.
Oh and never let them talk you into pressing accept and then "refunding you via paypal".

That is why I am going to test it :P
it seems to have an standard USB that you can use to charge other devices, I have a few older devices I can test this out on.

Just remember that it is cell capacity, not the output capacity they rate, since there is the DC:DC conversion and the losses of that you usually get about half of the mAh at 5v from the output socket. Many youtubers have gone on misguided rants about the capacity being less than they expected.

Cell capacity and efficiency is one of the biggest things people don't understand about portable battery packs. At the end of the day it's one of the key differences between good quality products and poor quality products.

The charging rate and ability to "smart" charge a device is also key - especially with high capacity devices. many cheap battery packs (and still some brand name ones) have no smart charging ability and will simply charge at 500mAh despite claiming they have 1A or 2.1A ports.

Aliexpress is a very interesting site at present. I've purchased a lot of products from various sellers and have never had any major issues.

What I have noticed in recent times however has been some very poor quality cheap products - and when sellers are selling hundreds of something for a few $ each week they're clearly onto a winner if people don't actually complain because they think it's too much hassle for something that's only cost a few $

The asking for you to accept a partial refund for the express shipping when things were "accidentally" shipped non tracked is another scam that sellers do on there. Of course it was never shipped so you accept the partial refund and then nothing arrives and you're out the rest of it without getting your card issuer involved.

Have found quite a few sellers will offer you a refund, or partial refund, without involving Aliexpress themselves, in exchange for positive feedback. Possibly how some of the sellers maintain such high feedback scores while being completely dodgy.

Also how hard is it really to game the feedback system? Sell a thousand small good items and bury the negative feedback in positive feedback. Even pricespy has this issue. Some of the drop sellers have suspiciously generic positive feedback, all ten stars, but the negatives are all 1 star with detailed reports of why they are unhappy, nothing in between.

aliexpress lists the feedback on a per item basis, not everything that the sellers sell. Something trademe should learn from since I dont care that people are happy with their $2 widgets from the same seller.

Interested to learn of others' experience with AliExpress. I've been wary of buying anything electronic or high-priced, but have been very pleased with a variety of smaller/simpler purchases - all at a small fraction of the cost of buying locally. Things I've bought include ink cartridges; door knobs & lock; flash drives; sugru; digital thermometers; orthotic insoles; rotary cutter blades & thread scissors. So you see AliExpress has become my default for all sorts of things, but not fancy electronics...
