Personally I'd have argued and and debated it a bit harder, possibly with a mediator, but I hope you are happy with the outcome.

I called the ombudsman, he said there are guidelines agreed to by insurance companies which are legally binding. 

Arguing could have jeopardised by 8 years, back to 5 years. 

I wouldn't say I'm "happy" but I am "happier" than 5 years, or nothing.

There is no requirement for the insurance company to attend mediation.

You should have received a letter of cancellation if the policy was cancelled in which case they should have that on file. 

I think you are going to be out of luck though.
