Apple pricing always makes the eyes water. I am currently looking at buying a new iMac and my eyes are streaming

Just thinking of owning an iMac would make my eyes stream, but nothing to do with price :)

I expect having everything work so well would be a shock...!

LOL WORK and iAnything shouldn't be in the same sentence together. It's not possible to work on an Apple product, they are toys.

And yet I work in a University with Mathematicians, Physicists, Chemists, Microbiologists,Statisticians, Engineers,Bioinformaticians, etc etc who use Macs as their main/only machine, and then we have all the postgrads who use Macs. I know of one person who wrote her Masters Thesis using Apples Pages (ugh... THAT I will never understand).
ALL my work is Mac based (though the CAD program I use DipTrace runs in a WINE environment). And at home my USB Logic Analyser works well on my Mac Mini.

Macs are not just for running Photoshop....

It takes time and effort developing software. With a lot software today you have to deal with OS changes, bugs, security holes being discovered etc. to have something that is safe to use and that works well.

Should the developers have to update the software you bought indefinitely without getting paid to do it? Would you sign up to do that kind of unpaid work?

No, and I have personally bought every single version of Parallels since version 1 (some multiple copies)
And at work over the years I have bought hundreds of copies of parallels.

However the current pricing structure over the life time of the machine (5 years) has gone from $79 to $420.

I have also bought updates for a lot of other software.

I am in the process of buying over $30,000 worth of software at work.

I have no issues with buying software, having software on a maintenance contract, etc. I object to the new price gouge though.

LOL, I got my version of Office for $10, uni students get it for free.

lets end the mac vs pc war shall we? i know its fun, but its been done to death an each side is never going to agree.

regarding the OP, yeah its the software as a service model, you no longer buy software, you subscribe. personally I'm in favour of this model, as long as its cheap. Microsoft said when they got into azure computing, they were shocked at the prices people were willing to pay and didnt realise it was a race to the bottom (paying as little as possible), but it can work obviously.

and on the flipside, some things have gotten incredible cheap because of this model. and you get the added benefit of using the same software on multiple devices (across different OSs etc) as long as you sign into it.

as a software developer myself, you guys have to pay to keep me in the lifestyle i've grown accustomed too :P
