SWMBO and I have an LG front loader/dryer combo unit which we brought from Harvey Norman about 8 years ago. Our experience has been similar to those already mentioned - clothes would get steamed to death but would never dry, they were always warm and wet. We also found that using the dryer only 3 times (the only 3 times we used this function) actually doubled our electricity bill. It's all well and good for sellers to say "things have improved" (I've no doubt they have) but based on our past experience we wouldn't buy another combo unit.

Used one of these when staying in a Paris apartment a few months ago. The full cycle took over six hours, and at that point everything still felt steaming wet so I had to give it another hour. My clothes were then passably dry, but all my undies were shrivelled and shrunken (and still are to this day!).

SWMBO and I bought an F&P Smart Drive 23 years ago, to put in the house we bought - which came with a clothesline.
I had to replace the clothesline a few years ago, but the washing machine is still going.
To be fair, I have replaced the bearings and seals, the motor control board, the display board (twice), solenoid valves (twice), rotor position sensor, the lid, the waste pump, the plastic control panel overlay (twice), the lid switch, the inlet hoses, and the outer case is getting a bit dented and rusty. But there are still a few original parts still in there, possibly in good condition, the wash drum, and the motor anyway.

jonb: For occasional use, just get a decent dehumidifier and stick it in a small room next to a clothes horse, on laundry setting.  Our Mitsubushi MJ-E26SX works well doing that.

This.

In my laundry there is a washing machine, a hanging bar (like you have in a wardrobe) going wall-to-wall, a three level folding plastic-coated wire drying rack and a Mitsi dehumidifier. I prefer to hang things outside, but if the weather's bad (or for items that I don't want to fade or the care instructions specify to dry in the shade) when clothes come out of the washing machine: shirts, dresses, etc. go on plastic hangers on the bar; trousers go on wire hangers (through the belt loops) on the bar; socks, underwear, etc. on the rack; anything that has to lie flat (woollens, etc.) on the rack. Dehumidifier on, close the door. All but the heaviest garments dry overnight.

And you can use the dehumidifier elsewhere in the house if you need it.

I have a F&P washer I bought new probably 13 years ago, never had to do anything to it - still going strong. Got an F&P dryer 2nd hand off Trademe 9 or 10 years ago for $40, also never done anything to it and also still going strong (and was probably at least 10 years old when I bought it).

Are you sure that you're not just gaining weight tongue-out

That has been my excuse over the time LOL

Heh heh heh.
I think the first time I needed to fix ours was at about the 13 year mark.
