jonathan18: A workmate was telling me the other week he bought a pair of Blackbox M10s for $20 at a charity shop here in PN; that's certainly a lot cheaper than I paid for mine! I'm assuming the shop had no idea what they were selling.

As far as non-tech stuff, I got my wife for her birthday a stunning six-setting Shelley tea set for under $130 from a s/h shop in Bulls last week - another seller in the town said that seller has no idea of the value of what he's selling (unlike the shop on the turn-off to Taupo - they have the opposite problem!).

Are you referring to that shop selling all the mega-pricey imported French antique stuff?

tdgeek: Any recommendations for a good place for donating to, in CHCH? We just bought a house this morning. The weekend we move which will no doubt leave a keepers pile in garage, a sell on TM pile, but I'll make a give to charity pile too. Ideal if they pickup, but not crucial.

Contact Help for the Homeless in Chch. They'll be interested in any furniture/household items you're giving away for the houses they have for homeless people. Tell them I recommended them...

I picked up a Tivoli radio for $40 from a second hand shop, they retail for about $350. Don't think they knew what it was. The good thing about second hand shops vs trademe, is that it isn't an auction, so you can go in and buy it. Also purchased some second hand furniture off trademe via turners, that was ex government department. For example an office chair that when new was close to 1k, which I picked up for $30. Also a designer coffee table just has a few scratches, that retailed for about $800, for just $20.

I think that's the store next door, going by Google Maps. The shop on the very corner is the one I'm talking about, this is similarly over-priced but it sells chinaware etc, as opposed to furniture. Some lovely stuff there but I could never afford to buy from them...

The one I bought the tea set from is further down that same road, called Scotty's; stuff is totally eclectic (read some good, much crud) nor not well-displayed or well-kept (it'll need a good clean!), but at least there are bargains to be had.

Yep, that's it; "French & Sons". Some great things in there but way outa my price range. I haven't been to Scotty's, will have to have a look some time.

Woodville has four second hand shops and I've often grabbed some useful bits and bobs from over there.
