manhinli: I'm only 500m from SkyCity Cinemas Highland Park , their service and seats are terrible.

Berkeley Cinemas in Botany is way better... wider seats, a curved seating arrangement and one of the biggest screens in NZ. They've even got Circle Lounge (fancy people stuff).

I live on Bucklands Beach Road

The highland park cinemas always have that faint smell of...vomit.
Berkeley is much nicer. I still haven't been to hoyts in sylvia park.

My last visit to a theatre was about 4 years ago and I vowed never to waste my money again.
I can't recall if the seating/sound/picture quality were any good - but I certainly remember:

People texting all through the movie (with accompanying "New Txt Message" ringtones;
People answering and talking on their phones;
Some little turd with a laser pointer flicking it all over the screen in the dark scenes;
Teenagers being dropped of by mum & dad, staying for the first 10 minutes then leaving (noisily) to hang out somewhere cool, then returning (noisily) for the last 10 minutes so m&d thought they'd been at the movies the whole time.

At $30+ for two people, I just buy or rent movies now - much less stressful

Yup, cinemas need to up their game and lower their prices IMHO. With prices of large screen LCD / Plasma screens tumbling and the huge range of realtively cheap home cinema amps and DVD players available, many people now have setups that rival or surpass those of their local cinema in their own house. Couple it with the ability to pause and the huge difference in cost ($30 to buy a DVD versus $45 for a family of four to go to the movies), and there would have to be a pretty compelling reason for me to shell out on a trip to the movies these days.

Fossie: This was the place. You're going to have to get to Australia though!

I've been to the ones at the Goldcoast. Very nice.. Though I don't think that they are PQ andd soundwize as good at the Imax in Auckland..

Hoytes at Silvia Park , AK have one that I know of. Went to see Pirates 3 there. After the 35mm preshow ran the video server would not start . Looked back and there was a guy frantically talking to someone on a fone. Took about 15 minutes to get it going again..

I'd have to say that the best cinema I've been to in NZ is the hoyts in sylvia park (Auckland). The seats are nice and big, maybe even slightly bigger than the readings or berkely ones. There is tonnes of leg space, i can stretch out my legs all the way without any trouble and the seats at the front of the cinema are far enough from the screen that it's still comfortable watching a movie from them.

They also have the beanbag cinema which I've never tried but sounds interesting nonetheless =oP
