SJB: I predict that within the next 5 years someone in America will develop a semi automatic assault rifle with a phone built in to the butt and a camera on the barrel.

That way they can chat to their mates and stream live on the internet while they kill their Muslim neighbours because they parked their car a metre to close to said gunmans property.

And Trump will be starting his second term.

Anyone old enough to remember Beverly Hills Cop III and Serge's Boutique Gun Rack will be familiar with the Annihilator 2000.

This included cd player, phone, microwave, and much more!

frankv: I've got to agree that a handheld/hand-controlled device isn't practical when driving or cooking. And that screens aren't good enough in bright sunlight (and too bright in movie theatres). But that doesn't mean the end of smartphones; just that some other human interface is needed (e.g. speech -- already used for car nav apps), and that screens need to be improved.

Or, and this is a bit of a stretch, but bear with me here... maybe people don't need to look at their phones all the time? Perhaps, after paying a lot of money to watch a move, people could put their phones into a pocket or bag and just watch the movie?

Bah...

They are focusing on M2M or "Internet of Things" in that article. They forgot to mention human interaction - voice, messages, status updates. An AI in the cloud perhaps but using the phone as an UI? Oh, wait: Ok Google, Siri, Cortana...

I reckon. I went to 7-Days last week and the Billy Sitch beside me kept taking photos using a smart phone with a very bright (but pointless given distance to stage) flash dazzling people around her. It was set to illuminate for few seconds before taking the photo. Wouldn't stop when asked politely by several people around her and had to be dealt with by an usher.

In 5 years there will be a reverse trend so instead of phones getting bigger they will get smaller until in another 5 years they will get bigger again.

The same thing seems to happen in the car market, people want big cars and then they want small cars.

Either way I wonder what the iPhoneX will have in the way of features, 1TB of storage, 30 MP camera, 10gigabit wireless and still only a battery that give enough charge for 24 hours.

It's very unlikely this will happen. Smartphones will be around for quite a bit longer I'd imagine.

THEY HAVE WHEELS. WHY ARE THEY CALLED HOVERBOARDS WHEN THEY HAVE WHEELS.

In NZ I've only ever seen the wheeled ones called Gliders . Only the Poms seem to call them Hoverboards..

If AI is up and running in 2020, it still needs to be hosted on some kind of device. Be it a smart phone or some snazzy decedent.

Data can come from wifi as well as cellular, so not sure why they would be irrelevent. Also the great thing with a mobile phone is it goes with you to other places, not like those stupid landline phones.

Living on the top of a hill we are lucky enough to get a wireless connection from a mast in the distance but you need line of sight. There are plenty of people who are in dips or behind hills who aren't so lucky and still on dial up.

However it's a lifestyle choice. I'd rather live where I do with a slow but usable internet connection than have neighbours.

There has been nothing revolutionary in phones for quite some time now. Every year its slightly faster, thiner, etc.

Who knows what will come out of the lab in 5 years time to production, but if nothing happens then in 5 years I think we will just have faster lighter phones.

If flexible batteries come out of the lab, then we may see watches with enough battery to get thru a day with 3G on and use.

Other than that I dont think much will change.

My pick is we will have to wear or carry some form of processor but the display will be somewhere between our current VR/AR attempts, such as oculus/hololenz and more 'straight to the eye technologies' such as googles new Magic Leap.
Wearables and clothes will be intertwined , gloves will be a big part of the UI
One thing is for certain that there must first be a massive increase in either device processing power ( and cooling) or much more bandwidth to the server, I'm going with local processing power because VR wont tolerate any lag and the data transfer for something like magic leap is going to be nothing short of staggering.
