MikeB4: I simply don't give a toss about accents, I am interested in what people say not how they say it

What is the point in that if you can't understand it?

A few of the recent experiences with Bangalore recently made me consider driving into oncoming traffic.

sbiddle: I think most NZers (and I count myself in that) speak horribly. It's not just out accent, but our inability to pronounce words.

LOL, my Kiwi wife was ribbed in Norway for pronouncing Mars Bars as "Maaas baash". You tend to leave out R's here.

Don't think Kiwis talk that fast though, but usually faster than Ozzies.

Geektastic: Out of pure curiosity, do you think the accent has 'thickened' (for want of a better expression) over 50 years or so and if so, why?

Watch a few country calender episodes from the '60s. Farmers putting on their best queen's english attempts for the cameras. Including Maori farmers as well. It was kind of expected. Of course there were a few minor ex-aristocrat farmers in the mix long long ago as well.

Imo there are many factors in the change. Some being a greater length of time since the original European ancestry and some being greater confidence as a nation of many peoples with diverse ancestry.

I have also dealt with them for many many years and stressed. I also dealt with countless migrants and it was there that I learnt to listen.

alasta: I have also noticed that New Zealand newsreaders sound a lot more British if you listen to archival material that is several decades old. Dougal Stevenson and Philip Sherry, for example, sound quite different from the modern newsreaders.

In the old days you had to have a "BBC accent" - that was part of the training.

Yes that's what I thought too - ie the accent coaching was part of the training and a prerequisite to being allowed on air. I'm pretty sure there was even an exam.

I haven't had any trouble understanding the accent in ages. I probably just need to get out more. ;)

i worked in Brixton, London for a couple months and everyone thought i was Irish in fact in the 80's when i was in London no one could tell where i came from, except the Australians. but our accent has changed as the American market has become more prominent due to the internet and our TV showing more American programs  .

Common sense is not as common as you think.

at an old job I had we were all performance standard tested by an Aussie outfit. Everything went well till the end when I couldn't work out why he kept asking me to get the leed. Leed? I don't need a leed.

Then it dawned on me later he was talking about a lid.

Is the NZ Accent sound that bad to foreigners? I can't see why Graham Norton is laughing so much.. Its just boring story as spoken by a NZer.
