Thanks guys - that has been super useful information. I thought the CBD was close to the hospital but I guess I am wrong!

I will be working at the hospital full time - and hopefully I will be offered a staff carpark there, thanks for the heads up on the parking situation it is really good to know in advance.

Okay that really narrows down the suburbs we should be looking at and certain helps. So looks like to minimize commute and enjoy the suburbs and community:

Island Bay / Houghton Bay / Hataitai. I think these will be my 3 top picks.

What's the travel like from East of the airport to the hospital in peak hours? I am used to Auckland traffic, but given now we are moving to a cool hip Wellington, I want to avoid as much as I can. I think I will likely drive.

:)

Insanekiwi: Thanks guys - haha Geektastic - why my name?! :)

The area I am looking at is little restricted as I have to be close from work. Karori seems nice but when you say peak traffic time - how long typically would take me to travel from that area to Wellington Hospital? I will have to be at work around 7:30-8:00am so reasonably early.

I think Kapiti is also lovely, but once again as I would prefer to either walk or use private car as my working hour is quite variable. I will finish work when things are sorted and not 0900-1700 job.

Okay - any areas I should avoid? What is Khandallah and Johsonville like? Is commute very long from these areas too?

Thanks guys!!

You'd have to be insane to pick Wellington...! ;-)

If you work in the hospital then commute from Khandallah, Johnsonville, Newlands, Tawa would be insane. If instead you worked in the CBD these Northern areas would not be too bad as you can get bus or train and it's nice to live around here...

The eastern burbs are pretty easy to get to Newtown (WuTown) from Kilburnie and Miramar / Strathmore / Seatoun. Average time would be 10 mins by car, or 20 mins or so by Bus. "If it were me" the west side hills of Miramar facing towards the CBD are better bang for your buck than Haitaitai. Kilburnie on the flat have some nice houses but no view. But the whole area is serviced well public transport. When I lived in Miramar it was a 5 min walk to the bus stop and I would be in the CBD in 20-25 mins on the express bus depending on how assertive the driver was.

I wouldn't also discount Newtown or Mt Cook. There are a number of really lovely houses, and only a small area of it has council houses. Nice urban community but the sections are smaller than over the hill so really it depends on if you want a house you can walk around the whole house with a decent section or a small garden / section out the front with a 5 mins walk to work.

Thanks friends. I will look out for the houses in the areas you guys recommended. I have emailed a few real estate agents for advice - nothing useful have been provided.

Last question if you guys don't mind.

Should I be worried about the airport extension buying a property around there. i.e. Haitaiai with noise etc.

I lived in Karori for 10 years, the last 10 years in Island Bay - I prefer Island Bay by a long shot (better weather, seaside suburb, community feel).

For hospital, I'd suggest looking at Island Bay, Berhamphore, Newtown, Mount Cook in the first instance.

Newtown often gets a bad rap for no good reason. There are some great houses there and it's the suburb the hospital is in, so a good place to start.

I don't think the airport extension would make much difference to noise in most places. It may be visual concern for small area like Moa Point but for places like Hataitai the noise might even drop slightly with an extension to the south. If you don't like aircraft noise the suburbs on the western side of Mt Victoria may be better.

Just some information re parking at Wellington hospital. My son is a full-time Specialist there, and I was amazed to find that he has to pay to use the hospital car-park. Seems ludicrous!

Based on the usual lead time for NZ large engineering projects, you'll be fine for 50 years or so while they "consult" every Tom, Dick & Harry they can think of. By that time they won't need it because we'll be using vertical take off...!

I had a mountain bike accident once in the UK and took myself to A&E the following day (had a big haematoma) and actually had to pay to park my car whilst I attended A&E as a patient!!

Hataitai to Newtown is relatively close and within walking (45mins through tunnel) or biking distance. Google the streets and you'll see you can go through the tunnel or around the long way and down constable st.

You could also try Kelburn, Te Aro, Brooklyn and Mt Victoria as alternatives, although nice suburbs you can still get houses at the $800k mark (needing work).

Island Bay, Kilbirnie, Lyall Bay and Karori are bus territory.

Good choice smile

I moved from Auckland to Island Bay 3 years ago.
An excellent seaside village environment.

The Number 1 bus runs from the Island Bay shopping center every 10 minutes and stops outside Wellington Hospital.  A 15-20-minute trip.
I don't need to run a car any more.
Parking at the hospital is very crowded so I use the bus.
