I believe they just count the number of different ip addresses inside a torrent swarm over time.

This website used to have decentralised tracker monitoring. You could enter your ip address and see a pretty accurate list of the torrents you were seeding or downloading which found other peers via the distributed database.

The numbers must account for disc copies too. Don't forget it is still super popular to download a file and make multiple discs and sell on the street in regions like South East Asia, The Middle East and South America. There must be some information on how they get their figures.

This is pretty simple to do, really. The numbers are far from accurate but are in all likelihood far better than those ratings systems the television companies rely on so heavily. The http://excipio.de/en/service/copyright-intelligence/]contractor[/url] simply monitors multiple public Bittorrent trackers for the cumulative number of times a particular film (in this case likely a set of keywords, e.g. all torrents containing the word interstellar would have their download totals summed for the film Intersellar) is downloaded and a report produced. It is probable that the filters for what is counted are relatively liberal since this contractor is likely trying to drum up business from the movie studios but it is a decent indicator.

Like that's accurate. Just looked at the link and shows two torrents going back to 2013 / 2014. Funny thing is this in the M-in- laws fiber circuit which I suspect does not have a fixed IP address..

As usual, VideoEzy with it's crazy Mondays (1$ / Bluray), Tuesdays ($2) and other deals, helped us seing some of those very cheap.
Those not listed below - we have not seen yet. From those listed below except of Mad Max - not really impressed.
Topic starter asks "How?" Would agree that perhaps they made the numbers up...

I always ask "Why being bothered downloading if you can get 3D BluRay for $1 to $6 and enjoy 7.1 Surround sound, 3D and extended special features (e.g.Hobbit) which sometimes more interesting than the movie itself?"

Altough you can't be sure that those rented BluRays are not pirated ...Who checks all those rental VideoEzy shops?

Jumping again to this movie's defence, there are many who love this film. I'm one, and, as a sci fi film, I'd rate Interstellar well above that other much trumpeted sci fi film that released last month!

Because people are cheap (generalisation) and rather get something for free than paying $1. Just look at those Trade Me people who post a question offering something just below reserve when they could easily bid and get the item for the start price for an extra $5.
