My (English) mother always made crumble with just flour, sugar and butter but my (Kiwi) wife always uses rolled oats as well. I've tried to get her to stop but she's never known any other way. I've also struggled to get her to stop putting feijoas into them - give me a good old apple and rhubarb crumble like mother used to make.

Odd that my experience was the other way round.  My mum (and me) always made the old fashioned sugar and butter method in NZ, but when I lived in the UK my mother-in-law would use oats, which I never really liked.

I think some of our childhood favourites have been highjacked by cafe culture but also by people wanted to make them supposedly healthier.  Some think adding oats to pudding makes it ok -  which is a load of nonsense of course.

Unreasonable behaviour. Grounds for divorce.

Mind you anyone who thinks mixing soup mix and tinned milk products together to make something to dip crisps into is a Good Idea is not really a person from whom to seek culinary expertise...! ;-)

Behodar:
Geektastic: 'new and trendy cafe-style' sort of nonsense.

Don't get me started! I bought a "bacon and egg pie" at a cafe once and ended up with a pie full of pumpkin and green stuff. It had maybe two tiny squares of bacon and I'm not sure whether there was actually any egg in there at all...

Agreed. Probably the same hateful people who insist on putting onion in quiche Lorraine.

And this is why people think Poms whinge, there is more than 1 way to skin a cat, some people prefer your method and others prefer using rolled oats because its easier.

Linuxluver:
Mark: What happened to crumble deserts when they made the trip down here to NZ from the UK ?  The crumble part seems to have turned from sugar, flour and butter into just a pouring of porridge oats and seeds ?

Just grumbling because I ordered an apple crumble and got something that looks like I should pour on yoghurt and have it for breakfast! :-)

This is crumble!

This is NOT crumble!

Totally agree. We make it the 'old' way.

So do we, just like the Edmonds cook book states.. Never had the other way. The 2nd way is a gluten free version.

Reminds me of a friend of mine who claims that there are 'degrees of authenticity': there aren't - something is either authentic, or it isn't.

Likewise, something is either crumble, or it isn't. It's a new thing that needs a new name.

I didn't know there was a crumble enforcement bureau to make sure that there was a correct crumble. Its just a name for some food.

You don't happen to like one recipe of it, so move on and try it from somewhere else. But coming to somewhere else and expecting things to be exactly the same as another country is something that the UK seems to excel at.

When I was in china I had a coffee at a cafe and it was terrible. It was funny to tweet about etc but I cant expect them to make things exactly the same as back in NZ.

You guys do realise I was just a fun off topic post right ? .. not to be taken as a cultural attack, just something humorous to chat about.

Also the crumbs in the bottom of the Weetabix pack is also good for adding to the Crumble mix :)

New Zealand's traditional Edmonds Cookbook recipe of flour, sugar and butter started to lose out to Alison Holst's oat recipe in the 1980s.

In the 1990s it became quite common to replace the flour/oats with muesli. I thought this idea was popularised in NZ from overseas magazines but it might have been homegrown as well. I remember family members using muesli in both sweet and savoury toppings at least as far back as the early 1980s.

Setting aside your calling my wife "wide"  I have had the crumble conversation and lived to tell the tale.
