I like both John Campbell and Duncan Garner so I can see myself flicking between them on the bus ride home over the next few weeks before I figure out who I prefer. Duncan's radio show gives a nice lead-in to Story, but my gut feeling is that Story will be gone by the end of the year because the ratings aren't going to be enough to cover the enormous cost of producing it.

It has been apparent for a while now that the future of overseas sourced entertainment content is on streaming services, but the future of domestic news and current affairs is only just starting to become clear. The new format for Checkpoint, the simulcasts between TV3 and Radio Live, the demise of 3D and the upcoming launch of Newshub are signs of what's to come.

Gavin Ellis (former Herald editor) discussed his predictions for NZ media over the coming year on his RNZ slot yesterday; this included a suggestion that TV3 would continue its move away from news/current affairs (no surprises there - those twits at the top Weldon and Christie are doing a great job of neutering TV3!), including reducing the weekday 6pm news to 30 minutes followed immediately by Story at 6.30, leading into some banal (my word!) entertainment show at 7pm.

I'd agree with Ellis that such a reduction in the length of the news isn't necessarily a bad thing - I find it quite tedious to sit through an hour of TV news (and virtually never watch the news this reason), and rather elect to get my news from RNZ and newspapers (online and physical).

am289: Campbell seems to do some great investigations, and we have to give him credit for asking questions where it seems others don't. I have to admit at times the emotion can get a little... Much, but I believe it's genuinely felt and does social good.

Looking forward to seeing how the video radio fusion work.

Luckily I'm not, but if I were in the public eye, I certainly wouldn't want my parents to be part of the discussion.

Their restaurant is also in the public domain..!

Does this channel 50 broadcast video for the whole of the 1.5 hours of Checkpoint?

It'll be interesting to see if RNZ begins including video with any of its other programmes, given the platform's now in place.

I did a rescan on both my TV and Tivo last night and then got the video. After the completion of Checkpoint they were just showing a static image of their web page.

Cmon man, seriously? No one is like he is on TV all the time, you'd die of exhaustion. I am not saying he isn't capable of empathy, and perhaps not even a terrible radio/tv presenter, but having actually met the guy, and seen him behave badly in real life, I don't think his halo is quite as polished as you'd like to think it is. I don't trust people who GUSH, and he is a GUSHER.

Anyone can have an off day, especially someone under the pressure of being in the public eye. You have no way of knowing what private issues may be affecting someone at any given time. I have corresponded with Campbell, and I also think he is perfectly genuine. If you already don't like someone, it is easy to find faults in their behaviour.

And if you like someone, or something, it is very easy to not find faults in their behaviour

I watched it on-line last night but I just did a new scan on my UHF receiver and it popped right up under the RNZ banner so it is definitely there. What I am seeing so far is just a browser window aimed at their Home page. I have the impression (don't know for certain) that they probably do other video from time to time, not only Checkpoint, but it's not a regular thing yet. All of Checkpoint is live video, but a lot of the news clips and other items are audio only, in which case you just see a graphic while they are running.

That is, take the 6pm news bulletin more in the direction of the awful Newsworthy.

We shall see.

No worries. Actually, based on my experience through listening to his slot every week for ages, I think Ellis is relatively even-handed in his approach towards his previous employer (though he couches his criticisms carefully, as you'd expect). Did you hear his comment regarding native advertising? Given the Herald (and NZME generally) is just as focused on this as Fairfax, this is an example of his approach.
