I am really close to buying a dashcam and setting one up myself.

Have at least 5 near-misses a week at the moment.

I notice on the motorbike, once people realise they are on camera often all of a sudden they become much better drivers.

I don't know how you ride around Auckland. I was talking about 5 near misses a week in an SUV, in which contact means insurance and inconvenience, not the imminent possibility of death.

Ive been riding in Auckland traffic for 30 years and only been wiped out twice in that time (1xdrunk driver and 1xtexter). The big thing is really paying attention to everything going on around you. I learned to assess every car before I pass it, watching where they are on the road (wandering around the lane) and looking to see if they are paying attention. I really makes me cringe when I see bike riders going way too fast between cars without any thought as to the disposition of the other drivers (or really dumb, scooters with riders wearing no protection and music blaring in their ears). I'll normally only pass between cars at just faster than they are going so I can react if someone does something sudden. That plus being able to use the bus lanes makes a huge time difference. My pet hate is drivers using their phones while driving over the harbor bridge... that really ***me off. Also people who sit at traffic lights texting away or updating their **** Facebook, not only is it illegal but at least half of them merrily drive off still finishing up what they were doing while paying no attention whatsoever to the road.

You're the one who said this is no fuss (because you ride a motorbike). My interpretation of your words is that near accidents are common for you.

Lane splitting is perfectly legal, but doing it at excess speed can easily be "careless use". So if you are careful about it, no problem, if you are not using "due care" then you'll get in trouble. One weird thing is using bus lanes (not motorway "bus only" lanes) if fine everywhere but parts of what was Waitakere City who last I had heard had not caught up with the rest of "super city".

People do make mistakes, whether driving or while involved in other activities. I know I make lots of mistakes so I try (with varying levels of success) to be forgiving of others. The problem with making a mistake in a car, is that you can kill someone. The consequences easily outweigh the gravity of a momentary slip of attention. Most of the time we get away with it. Occasionally we don't. When that happens, it is a tragedy. All we can do is keep reminding ourselves how easily it can happen, and try to stay on high alert.

By Auckland standards that Honda driver had plenty of room, that kind of driving is unfortunately to be expected, if i were the oncoming cars I would be expecting her to pull across me and I would be considering my options before she even crossed the white line just in case

To be perfectly legal the overtaking should be on the right of a car within the same lane. In practice as a car driver if you leave room on your left, expect bikes in your lane.

Not true, but possibly due to terminology:

Lane sharing = Riding in the same lane as another vehicle on the right hand side of that vehicle = Legal (provided there is sufficient space to do so safely).

Filtering = Riding between two lanes of stationary traffic = Legal (and actively encouraged in Wellington).

Lane splitting = Riding between two lanes of moving traffic including riding in the same lane as another vehicle on the left hand side of that vehicle = Not legal.

splitting vs filtering must be kinda hard to interpret in AKL traffic where you are stationery -> 20km/s hr.

I don't have a problem with it when done with a modicum of care - one less car I have to fight with. I will pull over to make the gap larger when possible.

But on the way in this morning I watched a bike go from the left, across the front of me (small gap, but OK) into a VERY tight gap in front of a massive truck and trailer, then past the car in front on the left, all while everyone was going 20->50km/s hr.
