So if physical mail turns up misaddressed, what do you normally do? Bin it?

We're still getting snail mail for the previous owner of our house, four years after moving in. So I  take a similar approach to the one I take with email. If it is obvious junk mail, I bin it. If its junk mail status can't be determined, I return to sender.

5 years now, and still get letters from companies for the previous owner.... have contacted said companies who acknowledge the fact the previous owners arent even in the country anymore, yet still send them to our address.... just bin them all now.

Had lots of NZ Police letters turn up at our number but not specify which unit, with a name on them which has never been at either unit. Those get sent "RTS, not at this address".

I used to get persistent previous owner mail, even after advising "RTS, no longer at this address".

I find that "RTS - Addressee deceased" works. Every time ....

Surely killing the previous occupant just to avoid getting their mail is a bit over the top?

Never happens to me. If it did I would maybe make one attempt at correction then filter it to trash by sender. No need to see anyone else's mail.

But that particular one it would not surprise me if it was actually pro-trump spam ; ).

Isn't it illegal to do that, as I thought it was illegal to interfere with someone elses mail? I thought it had to be address return to sender, or returned to the post office?

Yup, and no timeframe on it so I just have a copier paper box that it goes in, and when its full the whole lot go back to the post office, sometimes 5-6 years after they arrive. If it was important it would not be coming by snail mail.

I still get mail addressed to the previous tenant who moved out four years ago and I always return to sender, but based on the style and print on the envelope it appears to continue coming from the same sender(s). Unfortunately large organisations who send out a lot of mail end up getting a lot of returned mail, and they are too under-resourced to deal with all those returns.

My letterbox has no door because it kept getting broken off by people wanting to steal mail so I was just leaving it in the mailbox to blow away by recently some idiot companies have been posting to the street address and can't change it so I have reverted to checking the mailbox. It's on the wrong side of the driveway to be easy :(

I was pretty fortunate in getting my gmail address as I dived in when they first became available. The flip side is that for several years I've had some muppet using my email address to sign up for all sorts of stuff. Not just spam, but they used it for their blackberry account rewards points and even twitter. Where possible I've just reset the password and taken over the accounts. I had enough information from their sign ups that I could locate them on Facebook.

On another occasion I got sent email that was to do with a marital issue. Someone mistyped the email address but the intended recipient has the same first name as me. That was entertaining and I did well to refrain from commenting on the whole matter and making matters worse. His (presumably now) ex-wife was pretty hot.
