I don't like on-line censors, which are usually dumb as s*** (you get the idea) anyway, resulting in the kind of stupidities cited above. I do however see the value of some kind of restraint on those who can only speak in curse words, and definitely prohibitions on hurtling such words at each other. We have all seen such sites and they are not pretty. Geekzone is maybe just a wee bit too restrictive in this regard. Every now and then one really feels a need to cut loose.

Agreed

On our website we created a large list of banned words based off common slurs, plus racial slurs unique to the main countries that visited our website. We listed all the words in our help documentation, and programmed them, plus some common varients into the auto-censor. the The auto-censor turned all swear words into My Little Pony names, this resulted in a few people going nuclear but peer pressure and shame forced them to follow the rules. Those that refused to follow the rules by posting unanticipated varients just got suspensions. The latter group were few and far between, especially after the first few suspensions resulted in some players being unable to participate in the competitions we ran.

Ass is not a word for any part of the anatomy in British English.

I remember reading about a site that changed "ass" into "butt". It even did it if it was part of another word, resulting in a clbuttic example of things going wrong!

That was also Spark when they did a FIND/REPLACE of "Telecom" on their website and ended up with lots of "Sparkmunication"...

That's a way better name though. They should have revised the company name to that instead.

Funny, I just tried quoting your post and responding with freitasm's comment and I got censored.

Hey, at least we can say "Dick Smith". On some websites I've been on, "dick" is considered a swear word.

A few years ago, the University of Auckland got blacklisted by a US university because the address contained the letters "uck"...
