I've terminated as much usage from Google - only remaining is Gmail in an isolated browser. I have Ghostery installed and waiting for a good reason to let gmail off now

Big Data.

They can do it all quite easily. Yeh google started out with pagerank but how do you think their algorithms evolved? Pagerank is nothing like it was in the 90s. They Basically collected more and more data, geo-locations, OS. Looking at patterns in your geo-locations & searches to work out what is close to where you spend a lot of time. What you looked for in the past. What did other people who had similar searches look for in the past. The list goes on and on. And to be honest its not a lot of processing power needed to answer all these questions provided you can pull on the data which is what makes google google.

They own the two houses in Twizel and have been waiting years to get rid of them, so your search was the most anticipated event in their office.....

I'm not sure why - perhaps because it's a bigger market - but it is 100x worse here in the US. Total uncanny valley territory.

I can only see it getting worse with the Amazon Echo 'always listening, always sending back home' type devices.

Of course, what bugs me is that the targeted advertising is usually just trying to sell me (again) the last thing that I bought.
