Yes, crystal set 1950s. With a wire out the window onto the wire fence as an aerial. Followed a couple of years later by Hiker's One until mis-connected battery blew the filament! Couldn't resist building TV set in 1961 in time for WNTV1 going on air. In later years it was transistors for home built radio and then TV.

It is never too late to get that rusty soldering iron out of your drawer....

You can make DIY FM convertor for US FM Radio. e.g. 0.1MHz shifter is required to convert US FM into Auckland FM (not applicable to Welly boys, as US FM will work in Wellington and Kapiti).

26.4 and 26.5 Mhz crystals. Anyone has those?

5.6 mkH coils?

Those are not avaialble on eBay not in Jaycar or Surplustronics.

My first radio was working without the battery...

Absolutely would not have the slightest idea. I can remember my first stereo it was a Fountain as below I loved it but it went the way of the Dodo.

I am bit of a collector of heaps of old radios from early days to 1950's.

It wouldnt surprise me if you could find the coils on a Russian website

I bought cats eye tubes and they arrived very promptly to fix the problem in the previous post I made

It is easy to find almost everything on the RU NET but the problem is in transportation from there to here. I prefer HK as source for DIY parts - they normally arrive in 2 weeks tops.

China is bad with delivery - recently asked eBay for couple of refunds - 3$ components had never arrived after 1.5 months of waiting.

My very first attempt at a Crystal radio was a fail.

Had the 20ft aerial, tuning cap ( one of those bog multi-vaned ones), crystal earpiece.

My earth was .... a copper wire stuck in a bucket of dirt ... I had taken the term "earth" too literally ..

A local TV/Radio repairman put me right ...

Tinkered with electronics ever siince ... was a major hobby for many years.
