There's a Police Numeracy Assessment? surprised

I've always believed that there was no intelligence test to join the NZ Police.

The fact that the "correct" answer is given as 1 as opposed to 3/5 suggests that the situation is far worse... the Police apparently seek to avoid hiring people with numeracy skills. Perhaps this reduces Police payroll costs?

I cannot see a way to arrive at the answer 1, can you?

Prezactly! Anyone with the necessary numeracy to come up with 3/5 will be penalised. Only the innumerate *and* lucky guessers will get 1.

Must try this... "Speeding? Oh no, officer. My speed was to limit as 5/3 is to 1/5".

It's poorly worded, but the answer 1 clearly comes about because...

5/3 is 5 times greater than 1/3

5 is 5 times greater than 1

I misread the question.

The only way it can be 1 is if the denominators are ignored completely.

So 5/3 to 1/5 = 5 to 1.

Which makes no sense at all.

if that was the question, yes.   but that isn't what the OP wrote.

(so maybe the question had a typo? in which case the answer of 1 would be "correct")

Which would be the case if the 2nd fraction was 1/3, not the 1/5 that the question states.

I'm getting the feeling that there are two scenarios :

1. The question is correctly worded and the answer should be 3/5.

2. The question is incorrectly worded (should say 5/3 is to 1/3) and the answer is 1.

I'll have to keep retaking the test until I get that question again just to be sure.

I have a screenshot of the question but not the answer. Doh!

My brain hurts.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

It has to be a mistake. Either the question is wrong, or the answer is wrong. That wording at  least makes sense, and the answer is 3/5.

Off to do the test myself :)

Maybe its really an obediance test?

Did the instructions include "Answer 1 to all questions, even if the answer isn't 1"?

Before you on the table are two pills. One is red, the other blue. Which do you take?

The answer '1' is not correct for the question as asked.

I would have put the same as you.

I just did a couple of runs through, and the only ones I got 'wrong' were interpretation ones like this.
