I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss Ruslan Kogan and his Dick Smith venture. Few products listed and not enticing delivery times, but the site's been up for only 24 hours. The Aussie site has much more available - far more important to get that site up and running, probably simpler too with product crossover from Kogan.com.au, costing delivery etc already sorted.

He has had companies registered in NZ in the past - so must have had plans, but then removed / inactive. From what I've read about him, he's aggressive, determined, challenging, and "disruptive" to the market.

fair point but we can only comment on what we see and it isn't very enticing as it stands. I don't understand why you would just slap up a site just to get it running as the damage it could do in the short time may affect sales.

This could be a very good thing evening up some of the larger differences between here and aus in some categories. It is so logical it is surprising some one didn't try it before, but then Kogan dies appear to be a disruptor by nature.

That sucks. When they have a .co.nz site, selling things in NZ$ and targeting NZ customers it should be setup in such a way that this is all incorporated into the advertised price.

I don't know how other companies do it, but if I can but an iPhone from the NZ Apple site that ships from China without being charged additional fees then they should be able to do it too.

Ebay Global Shipping Programme, and many online US retailers as well. Not that my expectations for Ebay's GSP are high, but that's due to the freight-forwarder they use - last thing I bought was a new soft top for SWMBO's MX5, from a seller based in California. Shipping was cheap, but it went from California to Texas, then to Colorado IIRC - before being shipped to Chch. If I'd elected to handle / pay the GST etc myself, it might have saved $5 - not worth the bother - that part of Ebay's system works.
SWMBO ordered an 8 piece dinner set from Maceys - despite some fairly awful feedback from resellerratings. Freight was very cheap - about US$25 or something. The thing arrived in many consignments, 3 small side plates in a huge box from their distribution centre in Utah would arrive on my doorstep one day, the other 5 would arrive in another box a few days later, shipped out of Ohio or whatever. Even if they did this to avoid paying customs/GST charges, then it's very hard to see how they could have ever made a profit. At one stage they sent an apology email saying that they'd run out of stock of one item, next day they sent notice that they'd despatched the item from somewhere obscure. It all eventually arrived undamaged - over a period of about a month, about a dozen separate deliveries, leaving me with a basement full of cartons and bubble packaging.

Funny if they did a Jessops UK camera chain thing here. All the Jessops camera stores closed in an administration/liquidation. Then a while later the new owner opened a very few stores in selected locations around Britain. So I wonder if Kogan is thinking of doing that here in NZ? Just wondering, because a week on from the DSE closure there is no sign of the usual plywood panels put in front of a failed shop - at the Riccarton Mall, and all the Spark, Samsung, and Apple stands are still in there. Westfield usually whip those panels up very very quickly.

I would doubt they would setup in the same places if they do setup .I can see a good market for them if they did setup, selling cheaper stuff, and being disruptive. But it is a race to the bottom.

I have heard through industry rumours this is going to be a JB Hi-Fi. In fact I think someone may have posted this somewhere here to recently.

On a more on topic note, I'm not very impressed at the NZ pricing on DSE/Kogan. Given there are shipping costs - like $28 bucks on an Apple TV, as well as the potential to pay duty/GST when it lands! The pricing really does not stack up too well on a lot of the items on their site. I also wonder how CGA/FTA legislation applies given they are not really a NZ company? I doubt you would have much protection but I'm only familiar with how the CGA applies to my business to be honest.

Sorry about that! I've started a new thread where people can say what businesses are going into the old Dick Smith sites both in NZ and Australia.

Nothing over $390ish so clearly its all cheap stuff to avoid the buyer being hit for GST as things come in. Means no good monitors, no good TVs, nothing good really so kinda like the DSE of old.
