They charge for phone support because the absolute scum of the universe make up the vast majority of their customer base. Can you imagine trying to run a call centre to manage that mess given some of the comments you see on auctions? I'm happy with e-mail only support, nothing takes very long to be sorted out. The stated time frames are assuming they are working at maximum capacity.

And yet the same people are the customers of many organisations that DO run phone support....

Banks and insurance companies make a lot more money than TradeMe does.

A company that makes $40 million a year can answer the phone to paying customers. I do and I earn nowhere near that.

As I mentioned earlier, your customers are not made up of thousands of difficult, stupid, or downright moronic people. TradeMe profit is nothing compared to a bank here.

The level of support you get, is related to the amount of money you make them.  Top Sellers, such as myself, get an 0800 number.  Not that I ever have used it.

PS: Apparently, an in-house messaging system is coming "soon" which should hopefully get away from the email-bounced issue that many sellers encounter when trying to get answers out of buyers who think we can read their minds as to what option(s) they wanted for their purchase.
