You assumed that dispatched meant that it was on the way, they gave you a tracking number that would have verified that it was not collected by the courier and you are getting all angry at them for telling you that their system had dispatched in in the way that most people would understand it to mean, in a box, with the address on it in order to get delivered to you.

I think that is absurd to come on here saying you will never buy from them again when they are well within their timeframe for delivery of the stuff which when I last bought from them was 3-5 days.

If you had wanted the game to play on launch day then there are places that will same day courier things out to get them there faster. Mighty ape comes to mind, it is a delivery option that you pay for, same as evening delivery.

I think warehouse have done nothing wrong and you deciding not to buy from them in the future will probably not bother them one bit. I decided to stop buying gaming stuff from them when they went all family friendly and axed their r28 game selection, I made it clear to them and they didn't care about that either.

You keep asserting that I am bothered by the delivery timeframe when I have repeatedly told you that I am not. Are you so full of yourself that you think you can read my mind? My issue is this and just this: if a company sends out an e-mail that states A, it shouldn't be up to me to check that it really doesn't mean B.* All they need to do to be perfectly accurate and fully compliant with decent trade practice is to send out an e-mail with a title that says "Update on your order status" and a message in the body that reflects the fact that the item may or may not have been picked up.

Nor do I have any illusion that they will be terribly bothered by my choice not to buy from them again.

* This is actually well-established in case law on, for example, s 9 of the Fair Trading Act, which proscribes against misleading and deceptive conduct in trade.

I think they need to review their wording to maybe state something like  the order is ready for courier action and include a link to the couriers tracking service.  I agree that the way it is worded is not a good look for  The Warehouse.

Lest I get accused of bad mouthing this company and have some terrible agenda against them, they do include a link in the body of the e-mail to Courierpost's website. But I just think they would be safer to simply use a more generic e-mail body/subject if these are sent out before the items are picked up.

gzt: With any service I tend to assume 'one week' unless paying for a particular delivery timeframe. Many times the generation of the number and actual dispatch will occur same day.

Imo 'prepared for delivery' is one step worse. This phrase kind of implies it is close to your place.

Imo you may be asking for a level of integration that does not yet exist in NZ. Does anyone have that?

'In the pile by the door' might be as good as it gets ; ).

Yeah I don't really have any huge expectations regarding delivery timeframes, except when people explicitly promise a short timeframe. On the integration point, however, I must differ. I buy my protein bars from www.supplements.co.nz or www.sprintfit.co.nz monthly and I get dispatch notices when the courier has picked up the item, confirmation of delivery, and sometimes even when items are leaving the courier depot for delivery. All automated. As I said, I don't need this stuff per se but certainly think it's far more accurate and truthful to say that something has been dispatched when it has left the sender's control.

That's good. Which courier do they use?

Long story short, if you care about accurate, honest dispatch notices, buying stuff from The Warehouse's online store might not be for you.

I ordered a copy of Uncharted 4 online last week. Although I didn't have any expectation that it would be delivered on release date (May 10 IIRC), if that really occurred, it would have been nice. So imagine my pleasant surprise yesterday when I got a dispatch notice in the afternoon afternoon with a Courier Post tracking number. I didn't look into the tracking details further thinking there is a good chance that I will have my item in hand today (I live in Auckland).

It was an unpleasant surprise when I clicked into the tracking link this morning to see that my tracking number was merely created yesterday afternoon and that my item was only picked up by Courierpost today. Yet The Warehouse had the gall to send me an e-mail yesterday with a first line that says:

Items in your order/s have been dispatched and will be with you soon.

I order plenty of things online. Everybody only claims that an item is dispatched/sent when it is picked up/has left the sender's control. Amazon will tell you that your item is being prepared for delivery but only claim that it is sent when the courier has it. "Dispatched" in ordinary English can only mean that it has been sent out. On one level, this isn't a big deal but I really dislike companies telling porkies. I won't be buying from TWH online again on principle.

I think this may have something to do with the truck driver with the "she'll be right" attitude that rammed the Penrose bridge.

Presumably the courier has a contract with the warehouse to pick up, email system scheduled to fire out the email, but the courier could be stuck on the motorway.

Just guessing though.

I think their wording is fair enough actually. They have dispatched it - it is just waiting for a courier to come pick it up.

The Warehouse have more or less not got control at that point, hence they provide you the tracking number so that you can monitor the item's progress using the service provided by the courier (who effectively now has control over the item). It just so happened in your case that there was a delay between The Warehouse being ready and the courier being ready.

To say you will never shop with them on principle seems a bit outlandish to me! Although I completely understand you are disappointed you don't have the item for release day - I wouldn't be jumping for joy either.

I courier a lot of stuff from here for my wife, if asked about shipping status if it is here awaiting the courier to collect I advise "awaiting collection" if the courier has collected I advise "dispatched" and give the tracking numbers etc

It appears that at least some of us care about full and frank communication. Phew.

Radomatic: For the last time and for your benefit: I don't care about not getting the game today, nor do I have any issue with the delivery timeframe. People like you keep asserting (without further argument) that the item was dispatched when it was sitting with TWH and not picked up. What's your justification? I've at least referenced the ordinary dictionary meaning of "dispatch" and (I won't repeat my argument again, it's in my second post here) it's strongly arguable that the item wasn't dispatched by merely making it ready for pickup. And this interpretation of the concept of dispatch is also in accord with common law presumptions on passing of risk to goods, for example.

In any event, I speak from professional experience in reviewing on a daily basis corporate advertisement and communications to avoid contravening best practice and laws such as the Fair Trading Act. Without even really trying, TWH could have avoided any arguments/controversy by adopting a less definitively sounding e-mail if there could be cases where by the time the automated e-mail was sent that the items have yet to be picked up.

What's the point of this thread?  Nothing is going to change.  The Warehouse aren't going to change their system, which many of us in this thread do see as being reasonable.

At some point, it's just people complaining that some subjective definition isn't met, others suggesting the definition is subjective, and others agreeing on various other subjective definitions.  And negativity about it not meeting one of those.

Warehouses have a department called "despatch". Once the item reaches the department they put the cello tape on the box, whack the courier sticker on it and "despatch" it. As far as the warehouse is concerned, it is "despatched".
The next step is up to the courier, who will notify " picked up"

It's pretty basic terminology.
