Awesome photo ops.
Yep we were at Whakapapa during the 90's eruptions and got some great shots. I wouldn't do it now though as I could run quite fast then and the rocky surface up there is a pain in the butt for a wheelchair.
Replace wheelchair with quad bike?!

xpd:
Didnt White Island just have a decent quake as well...... somethings about to give... ;)
They are all connected, part of the Taupo Volcanic Zone.

Please no. Yes they're both part of the TVZ, but there's no suggestion that activity at one influences the other.
I see some GNS volcanologists are doing an AMA on Reddit, 25 May from 6 - 8 p.m.

Yes - with a rock deflector above it, a rock deflector below it, and a gas-mask on the engine intake.
Seriously though, if it is going to give a good "burp", it had better hold off for a few days. Gale force NW winds and cloud forecast until at least Sunday, not good for photo opportunities.

I wouldn't be trying to get a refund on a season's pass just yet. Geonet/GNS monitoring is very good (world class) subject to the proviso that anything could happen very suddenly and unexpectedly anyway.
More of a threat to skiing plans may be the weather. It's very warm here (Chch), I'm still harvesting tomatoes from the garden, not a hint of a frost yet (though on the Port Hills here we get very few anyway) and very little rain. Any cold snap has been short-lived, then reverts to warm N/NW patterns.
Agree... I'd wait for the snow before buying a season ticket. I drove past Ruapehu on Monday. I've never seen so little snow on it (40 years of memories). The unseasonable warmth will last at least the rest of this week.
Can't imagine anyone skiing at Queens Birthday! I doubt there'll be any skiing on Ruapehu at all in June.
Hope it doesn't erupt, would ruin the Queenstown ski trip later in the year..

Hate to break it to you, but your QT trip is already ruined. It has become a hyper-tourist destination, locals can't even get long term accommodation.
The majority of people ruining your ski trip would be Aussies, who see QT as a cheap ski destination. QT's heliski packages cost about the same price as Australian ski lift packages.
Previous years have gone to Wanaka and paid for the accommodation for extended family, this year only 3 going so I thought Id go to Queenstown to confirm it isnt where I want to go in the future.
Rather than slag it off as crowded having never been there, I thought i'd go this year then slag it of from a point of experience...
If its really bad, I'll drive to cardrona/treple cone

A short presentation from Geonet on how they go about monitoring Ruapehu:

It'll still be fun :) If the Aussies have a good time local tourists would too. Just have to pay more than if there were no loud obnoxious Aussies around.
I've got very mixed feelings about Q'town - based on being a regular visitor for 30+ years, and despite the fact I've never had to pay for accommodation as we have friends/relative there and always a place to stay.
Probably summed up by my opinion about the old saying "you can't stop progress" - but of course that doesn't define what "progress" is. I liked it better 30+ years ago, so IMO it certainly hasn't seen any progress at all.
Last time I skied at Coronet Peak, I vowed to never go back, despite express lifts, I spent most of the day standing in queues, the queues were awful because certain cultures are unaccustomed to the idea of forming a line and constantly push and shove, and I've never seen such a concentration of abject morons going up and down a skifield road, held up by idiots who'd crashed. A late start because of said road chaos, late home because of a repeat of road chaos, and very little skiing in-between. To be fair - that was school holidays - I should have known better. I'm not going back to see if it's improved.

I try everything humanly possible to never do anything "fun" during school holidays. Oh the hoards ... !
