Hahahahahaha.

It amuses me now (used to annoy me) how when the minority (usually the left wing minority) don't like something they see fit to bombard everyone else with how much they don't like it, and try and convince themselves that 'everyone' musn't like it.

What are the ratings for Seven Sharp? I can't find recent ones, but in December last year, they were getting about 365,000 viewers. 15,000 who have signed (and aren't watching anyway I'd hope, since they don't like him) aren't going to worry TVNZ.

Who would they replace him with anyway? John Campbell would be the petitioners choice I'd wager. I'd start a petition then...

I wonder what verification steps are taken before a petition like this is presented to Parliament?

It amuses ME how many people in this country think there IS a left wing or a right wing. We don't have an extreme political system (thank god?) If we did there'd be Facists on one side and Communists on the other. None of our political parties are anywhere CLOSE to the edges. In fact, they have FAR, FAR more in common with each other than with any extremes on their respective "side" of the political spectrum. So it's a bid daft to blame "left wingers" for this, or "right wingers" for that.

I can’t stand Hosking either but my distaste is based more on intuition than experience since I always go out of my way to avoid him so I cannot make an informed comment on his remarks or presentation. As far as the petition goes, I see no problem with that. The company has the right to employ whom they please and to broadcast what they wish and viewers have the right to not watch it. They also have the right to provide feedback and this petition is precisely that. The company can decide what they want to do with it. I see no problems of any kind with any of this. I also don’t see the argument that it is an attempt at muzzling of free speech. The broadcaster already does that by making decisions in the boardroom about what programming is going to be offered. Television broadcasting in this country is hardly an exercise in free speech to begin with.

Nor do I see how this can possibly be another boring left-wing/right-wing debate. Politics has nothing to do with it. This is just another opinionated loud mouth with a platform sounding off.

Actually, my objection is to this entire stupid boy/girl let’s tell each other what we think format. Whoever came up with this idiotic idea ought to be shot. It’s bad enough to have it on one channel. Now we have it on both because TV3 thinks it can somehow resurrect itself by doing exactly what TV One does. I don’t care what any self-important talking head thinks and I certainly don’t care what they say to each other. I care about information and informed opinion of recognised experts and there is precious little of that on TV these days. I used to enjoy Mark Sainsbury and John Campbell and even Paul Holmes in his day. I definitely don’t enjoy the drivel that passes for infotainment these days, regardless of any political viewpoint expressed or supported. TV in this country has been killed by commercialism and short-sighted government policy and there is no longer any hope for it.

Exactly, and no there isn't generally, potentially people who don't even know what TV3 is can sign up.

You've missed my point entirely. There ARE no right wing parties in New Zealand, just as there are no left wing ones. They're all centrist, and just a whiff either side is as far as you can go...

OK fair enough, so let's ignore the terms "left wing" and "right wing" and ask instead whether you think some broadcasters favour people who are "quite wealthy" and others favour those who are "quite poor"?
