Is it any different to writing something on the side of someones car with lipstick? Also not damaging but it is defacing someone's property. I admit though that this is a pretty extreme comparison but the principle must surely be the same?

I think the proper comparison would be writing 'wash me' in the dust.

Short of only employing people with photographic memories, I don't see an easier way.

Also, when DO they chalk the tyre, they must have some rough guidelines around this. I'm guessing that if you've paid for 1 hour for a on street park, then when you have under 10 minutes left, then they'd chalk.

And slightly off topic, but still relevant was this story from TV3's Story the other night. This relates more to private car parking companies, more than local authorities. Worth the watch.

Also, when DO they chalk the tyre, they must have some rough guidelines around this. I'm guessing that if you've paid for 1 hour for a on street park, then when you have under 10 minutes left, then they'd chalk.

Chalking is to catch maximum time period overstayers ie meter feeders, it isn't related to the current amount paid. So long as you haven't overstayed the P120 etc limit on a metered space you have 5 minutes to pay for more time. Some Councils extend to to 10 min, Wellington gives 6.

I have a vague memory of this blowing up years ago and the outcome being marks on the tread OK, sidewall not OK. I have also seen small stones left on top of the wheel as a marker.

Chalk doesn't enable collective enforcement. For example if warden A chalks a tyre on a car in free P30 park, when Warden B coems along, they don't know how long ago the chalk was applied.

In the absence of chalk, wardens could write down or otherwise record plate numbers and times.

I know, its just a shame that those asshats littering on my car never get anything done with them. When at a mall security will tell them to leave, but they cant force them to go and un-litter on the windscreens.

Driving thru the carpark with a car equipped with ANPR cameras on them, also running the plates against lists of cars of interest for debts owed etc as well.

Wellington City Council used to have one of those cars roaming the streets....

And the thing got me too...the wife had parked (in the tourist bus stop outside WCC) to drop me off at the WCC (where I worked at the time) . I paid the fine in full.

Normally they mark the tread, which wears off as soon as you drive it.

And, of course you have the right to remove the chalk, but you don't have the right to overstay the park (the terms of which you implicity agreed to when you parked there). They cannot 'fine' you for doing so, but they can recover their losses (including an admin fee) for you overstaying the agreed time. Usually if they have marked you, they are also probably still in the carpark (sitting in a parked car?) watching. I have been pinged at a Westfield park for 'Not being there as a customer' - and I wasn't - I was there doing work in a store in a Westfield and the guy saw me hop out of the car and go in the loading door of a store in the same carpark.

I hope you added that onto the bill for the place you were working for in that case.

No, work did pay it though. I didn't even see the signs, but they were there. I have been back to that centre a couple of times since for work and always park in the same place, but just go into the store via the mall rather than the loading bay now.

Countdown has a parking warden ????? if you're shopping in the supermarket itself you are legally allowed to park there for as long as it takes even if it means all day.... But if you park in their "private customer car park" and then beggar off somewhere else then they're quite within their rights to have your car towed as you are not a current customer doing your shopping inside the store

It is legal for them to mark your tyre.. they have "colour of right" (ok its an old term and been replaced because no one speaks English any more... Sue me)

It is legal for them to place the notice under your windscreen wiper.. they are able to "attach a notice"

No!, a person attaching a notice advertising a strip club does not have "colour of right" nor do they have an exemption to "attach a notice" This is "interfering with a motor vehicle" I once charged a person with this and he was convicted ... good job too, he was such a wa&^%r

That's why they use different colour chalk and symbols when chalking and write in their chalk / log books what they were using for that day (for court evidence)

Its no longer a trial. They are quite far through the install process of 3600 sensors. (Thorndon Quay outside my office was done last week)
