Wow so its a waiting system, thats pathetic. Ive never had to wait to be enrolled anywhere before. Damn our country SUCKS medically.

I bet when the housing bubble pops they will plug the $ with health funding.

So its like an enrolling waiting list?

When you enrol at a medical practice the government pays them a subsidy for 12 months irrespective of how many times you go to the Doctor.

Depending on where you are and the ethnic background of the area depends on how much funding they get. In my area there is a high number of Maori and Pacifica and the PHO has negotiated more funding for our area so my Dr visits are $17.50

If you move practice the Dr is not going to get the subsidy so you pay full price or if you are like my Dr they wear the cost until the next funding round.

I know enough to be dangerous

ethnic and geographical location also influence price? omg the health system is getting worse by the minute.

the person is seeing them about an ACC incident so hopefully it will be $50 not the $85. but i can see some funny rule popping up here. im beginning to become very disillusioned by our countries focus.

i must have just been lucky because every doctor ive ever changed to ive just paid the enrolled fee on that day.

It sucks that we waste $20 mill on a flag debate that was flawed from the start and was purely a luxury, but our health system is so underfunded. We also have ACC which covers if you have an 'accident', but you are not covered if you develop an illness, which like an accident, is also often just bad luck. I am not sure what I would do in your situation, but doctors should be able to give you some advice, you may just need to see the right one. You could also book in to see your local MP, or an opposition MP and let them know the problem you are having with these drugs not being funded. Hope all goes well for you.

im with you matt. i blew my disc at age 23, i chose the conservative route but now i want my life back and want the microdisectomy after 20 years technololgy is better. the same disc hasnt moved. prolapsed 180 degrees touching left and right root nerves and spinal cord. but because the above discs have small tears due to the strain of trying to use my muscles not surgery, ACC have labeled i have disc degeneration. my specialist said a few choice words about their intelligence and they basically label all injuries degeneration and its up to me to prove them wrong. so last time i had a lawyer send them a letter, free of charge to me, i got an mri and shots. didnt work, this time if the surgeon think the disectomy will help i will be going the same route. because i know there standard word already will be degeneration. my argument will be if you truely believe a 23yo 30 yo, 40yo (as its never changed) has degeneration then the original injury which was caused at work and made worse by work not letting me go home after the injury but continue stacking kegs, is the cause of the degeneration.

the friend finally saw a doctor, covered by acc, but the moron sent her off for xrays, and wants her to do physio which will do jack .... as shes been doing that for 3 years now and this compounded injury wont get better seeing physios. she is a doctor herself, in biology, actually and post grad, 8 years at university spent at some of the finest universities including otago, but shes not pretentious or stupid enough to continue hitting her thumb with a hammer to fix a sore thumb.

seriously, the amount medical doctors get paid for what is often common knowledge is ludicrous.

the government axed 600 DOC staff as its everyones right to do environmental work (meanwhile they keep the 100% pure tourism blanket over the eyes going). i think we should sack 600 doctors and nurses because the public have the right to help sick people. slap to the forehead.

having worked in acc like departments overseas (work cover etc), where is see the staff having the freedom to actually help people it makes me want to cry knowing ours is basically set up to turn people away, almost like, hey who can reject the most claims this month. thats how it feels.

if i sound bitter, im not, im way past that.

you go to countries like germany and switzerland and look at their standard of living and wonder how our country gets its priorities so wrong.

One of the problems of living in a country with low population, there is insufficient resources for the Government to fund everything we would like. There is only so much to go around.

I do see your point. However I don't really buy that argument these days, as NZs population has exploded over the last few years, and we are also now a far more urban country. WE have also been doing very well financially with milk exports etc when we should have been saving that money for a rainy day, like the Chinese have been doing. We are now close to 5 million, and it wasn't that long ago we were at 4 million. The thing is that we have had really poor wage and productivity growth, and there are a lot of lower skilled people coming into NZ, which isn't great for productivity. We also have lots of money to fund other things, and have been borrowing at low interest rates. Health is one of the most important things, I would put it well above almost everything that taxpapers money is spent on. Also how much value can you put on a drug that could save someones life, or make their life a whole lot better. We can spend millions searching for someone who is lost, or taking someone to court, or paying wrongly convicted people compensation, but then we struggle to pay a lessor amounts to potentially save someones life with a particular drug. The priorities do seem out of whack to me. The whole reason you want high productivity and an increase in living standards is to improve peoples health and well being.

You have to make sure you keep positive. Back injuries are very tough. I know someone who was paralyzed, after falling off a horse, and braking their back.It totally changes your perspective on everything.
